To the OP, I'm also in the Armed Forces and going through the process of buying my first place. A good broker makes the world of difference.
Are you using the Forces Help to Buy? If you are make sure whoever you pick is aware of this and is familiar with it. As far as the application goes everything can be done by email/phone. I had an initial meeting with mine to discuss options and then I had to sign the paperwork not long ago.
