TV competitions

I have just posted a dozen or so postcards to DE1 0NQ for the numerous TV competitions running at the moment and I was wondering how is money generated from entries? Does the postal service chip in,in some way or do mobile companies generate money to fund the prizes?I can't understand where the money comes from.Anybody in the know about this?

They make many millions from the pay routes (phone/text) that covers all costs (including dealing with the minority who make postal entries) and shows a very good profit.
In a recent set of accounts ITV had a £4,000,000 INCREASE in revenue from competitions (this was during the period they were switching to postal)0
