Is there any way for me to get this train without paying over the odds?

Why does everyone think that the only train from London to Gatwick is the Gatwick Express? You can also use the services from St Pancras/Blackfriars/London Bridge, via East Croydon, all of which run regularly and take about two minutes longer. And a shorter tube link too.

They want people to pay their ludicrous premium fares, which can easily be (legitimately) avoided.
