I cannot understand why hospital advising self certification if you have had an operation and unable to attend work. Self certification implies a short illness that you might not have needed to attend the drs for.
If in future they think to dismiss you due to inability to perform due to illness periods of self certification might not carry the same weight as medical certification
Yeah, it is strange, they signed me off last time, but she basically told me they dont like doing it as a certain nurse needs to do it and she isnt available all the time (like this afternoon when i get discharged).
I could walk into my doctors monday morning and ask to be signed off, and i have no doubt he would do it, but then i dont know if he would write the note our from the sunday (back date it)m or wether id need to self certify for one day then get a unfit for work note from the doctor, without the hospital giving me the note, a self cert just seemed easier.

Actually that did happen to me when I had an operation, because it was laprascopic they said I should be ok within a week and just to self certify

No, it does not. You could be off for six months, the first seven days would still be self certified.

Im out of hospital, and though i have a bad throat and cant really speak, i feel less ill than last time, so i may return to work in a few days.

Im curious though, i get "3 months full pay" while sick, would that be divided up to mean 5 days per week allocated for sick and assuming the other 2 days are days off or would they have 7 days allocated as a week?

Im asking because im want to be sure how much full sick pay i have left for later, id guess i have taken 2 weeks, but if they are going by days then maybe they may have a different figure.

I work 5 days with 2 days off, the days off changes from week to week, it could be any random 2 days in the week.
If i was to be off mon-fri on the sick, that would be 5 days sick, normally id then be entitled to 2 days off, but if i have been off sick all week i would we required to work sat/sun, so how can that be classed as a weeks sick when i worked 2 of the days?

Its no biggie, im just curious?

Our sickness records were done in hours rather than days due to varying shift lengths.
The way we used to work it was if you self certificated for the 7 days, we'd put that down as sick for 5 working days and two non-working days, the 5 days covering your contracted hours for that week.
If you were off sick Mon-Fri but working the weekend, we would put down the number of hours for each shift you were off sick and any non working days in that time would be recorded as sick with 0 hours.
Quite how that translated into sick days when it got to HR I have no idea.....

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

Glad it went well, and hope you recover soon.

Again - where I work - it's based on the hours you do - I work 42 a week, someone part time might work 21, or someone might do condensed hours - work 42, but over 4 days.

I would think if you normally work 5 in 7, then a week is 5 days - the 2 off being on different days doesn't really make a difference.

An additional factor is any equality policies your gaff might have. Where I work, leave taken because of treatment for a disability (cancer is a disability) doesn't count towards sick leave, it's granted as special leave.

That said - The only way for you to be sure is to have a chat with your HR dept or your boss.

Most HR advisers I've spoken to are quite nice people, and if you're saying you might have further operations you have every reason to be asking the question. It's a good idea to have the conversation to make sure everyones on the same page.
That sounds like a classic case of premature extrapolation.

Thanks, yeah, i was just better trying to understand how it works, its all straightforward if i take a week off, but part weeks i cant seem to see how it works, at first glance, it makes no difference if i take the whole week off or only 5 days, i will still get the same pay and still end up with the same sickness deducted from my allowance, at least thats how i read it.

I will be starting chemo in the next few months i think, which will probably mean longer lengths of time off, but i cant be sure how i will react to it.

My pay drops to 50% sick pay after 3 months, so then it will get complicated in regards to how many day i am off sick.

My hours per day change week to week also, some days i do 11 some i may do 9, if i am on holiday, they always put 8 hours on the hol form.

i am salarised so it doesnt really matter so long as i am above minimum wage.
    thanks again.

I would suggest, if a week is 5 days, a month is 20, and 3 months is 60 days paid sick leave.

I assume it's in a 12 month period, so you should keep an eye on when past sickness 'drops off' the sheet.

Its a rolling 12 months, so i will need to perhaps keep a diary with all my sickness logged, i photograph all my rotas as well, so i have all those backed up
