Cap1 Secured Card - Applications Available

Looks like it's back on the market for new applications (at last!).

I'm sure it used to auto-offer secured card if declined for normal, but I was declined and not offered.

If you google "Capital One Secured Card" you just get the FAQs (as has been the case for a long time). If you add 'apply' to the end of the string you get the following link - https://www.capitalone.co.uk/creditcards/securedTC25.jsf

I applied on the day they declined for a full card and got declined for that too - I've complained wanting to know why and had a response back saying it's because my initial decline was still in the system and apparently being manually reviewed due to NOC on credit file, so the secured card auto declined (still credit checked me though!).

So thought I'd try my luck straight for the secured card today (Cap1 were owed money in my bankruptcy). Been 'accepted' and told I'll need to pay a £49 security deposit within 80 days - I was expecting them to give me the full whack of £200 to be honest! (less than 6 months discharged).

Interesting to see if a card actually arrives, given my history with them, but it seems to have processed an application properly so thought I'd make others aware - nice way to help re-building credit file!

(After application you have to go to https://www.capitalone.co.uk/payments/secure/log-in.jsf to pay - but only after they've finally accepted you. Mine won't let me pay the fee yet as 'your application is still being processed'.

Luma gave me a card about 18 months post discharge from my IVA(which lasted 6 months), despite me including capital one debts in IVA, best limit i've had post IVA too
  • Great News if correct - I looked into them a few months ago and they had stopped doing the secured card in the UK, it was USA only.

Does anyone know if you can apply for this if you are undischarged? As I assume the amount of credit is £200 and not over the £500 threshold.

I have already got the mycashplus and icount credit builder cards so this would be another helping hand.

Do they credit check you for the credit builder card?

Another potential issue I have is, i actually have a standard credit card with capital one that was no included in my bankcruptcy, its about 5 years old and has not been used in 5 years also and has zero balance. I only discovered it after checking my credit file after bankcruptcy as I had my head in the sand for much of last few years I totally forgot about it and no longer have the card - but it is still reporting on my file. Who knows capital one may shut it down if they get wind of my bankcruptcy, but i have no other debts with them and it was always paid on time. My plan was to start using it again after 12 months to rebuild my credit. If i apply for this secured card do you think i run the risk of them shutting down my proper credit card?

You can as the law is to not get £500 of credit without telling them you are BR.

If you apply for the Secured you'll 100% only get £200 to start with (and for years afterwards based on what I've read).

Having said that, I imagine they'd decline applications from undischarged BR's.

Nothing to lose though I guess. They DO credit check for this. But bankruptcy far outweighs the effect of searches. Anyone that would consider lending to a recent bankrupt (especially undischarged) won't care about searches!

I've got tonnes on my file since discharge (easily 20+ in 5 months at one - I have 5 JD Williams Group accounts opened) - not desperate, I have some small savings now, just frustrated I couldn't start to rebuild after Discharge - but that was due to having debts with Aqua/Cap1/Vanquis (the usual 'credit card on discharge day' destination!) and a lot of creditors reporting I still owed money.

This is my final application til the end of September (1 year post discharge) so that I have 6 months clear of searches before trying my my bank (where my salary goes) once I've been discharged a full year.

If you don't mind me asking what are the other accounts that you have opened with your discharged bankruptcy?

Capital one was in my bankruptcy and they gave me 2 cards both with £1500 limits . I don't think they seem to care!

Wow, how long have you been discharged?? I'm guessing longer than me! I was only discharged in Sept 15 (bankrupt Sept 14), so I'm surprised to be getting anything.

My only accepted as Jacamo & co (I've made small purchases at the ones which were reporting to CRAs as unused rather than 0's).

My searches are all just me trying my luck really - due to the state of my file (Capquest messing about, 5k car default that should be gone etc etc) I never expected anything til it's sorted (and searches for JDW Group gone).

Jacamo was a £125 limit, 3 months 0%. Maxed it out with stuff I actually needed that was decent value (home stuff in the sale rather than clothes etc!). Limit went to £225, then £400 all within 4 months of discharge.

All my other accounts are £125 limit. Ambrose Wilson (my most recent this week...I think they knew I was taking the mick with that one) has only got a £100 limit.

As I start to pick up more credit & good history, I'll axe the Ambrose etc, especially if they don't get limit rises. Then I'll have 'successfully settled' accounts (apparently a good thing, based on a large bucket of salt taken with the Clearscore ratings)

I was discharged Dec 10 so that's already gone from all 3 CRA.

I did get a BRU it's only reported on experian that's there til October this year. I've got one small default left that the wrong date have a complaint with ICO currently to get the date changed...it's taking ages tho...it comes off June anyway.

How long before JD williams increases the credit limit? Was it on the second statement?

Vanquis was in my bankruptcy as well but they gave me an Argos credit card.
  • Interesting BRU is only @ Experian!

JD Williams issued their first statement a few days after I opened the a/c and bought from them (bit crafty really, as the initial payment date was then before my October salary - if I'd have not been on a 0% deal and only had to pay 6 quid then that would've caused problems!). But I'm essentially a 'month ahead' because of this I guess....

They increased on the 4th statement (Early Jan) and then again on the 5th (Early Feb). That was the Jacamo brand, all the others are just stuck on £125 (£100 for Ambrose). If I get this Cap1 card then I might axe 1 or 2 of them, to see if that forces my Jacamo limit up some more.

Its actually quite bad it's not reported....I've been able to apply for accounts that only search Equifax and get accepted for them. It's odd Equifax removed the bankruptcy after 3 years and they didn't ever report the BRU...call credit removed the BRU same time as the bankruptcy.

I've got 1 JD account £125 limit but I've only had it 6 weeks...I won't expect any increase til the 4th statement!

I didn't apply for any credit for almost the whole 6 years, it's only recently that I started opening accounts.
