Juicemaster?

Hi everyone,

I'm on day 2 of Jason Vale's 3 Day Detox. Currently I feel zombie-fied and extremely tired but I'm hoping I get a positive result by Saturday morning.

I decided to give juicing a try for a number of reasons. I'd developed a very unhealthy relationship with food and had got into the cycle of binging and obsessing about food. I've had to really fight to avoid binging and purging and I've hated what I was doing to my body. My insides felt rotten and overall I felt constantly lethargic and as if I was going to vomit. I thought about food ALL the time and could not stick to any diet though I was seemingly ALWAYS on a diet! I also had all sorts of digestive symptoms such as bloating, reflux, loud gurgling noises, bowel problems and the doctor put this down to a combination of coeliac disease and IBS. I'm also anaemic and on iron tablets permanently.

My friend tried the Juicemaster 5 day detox last year and raved about it. At the time I thought she was insane and never saw myself being able to go without Coffee and Carbs for more than a couple of hours.

Last week, I was in a really bad place, feeling constantly sick, hating my body (at 10 stone 8, I was the heaviest I've ever been) and I started to feel like I didn't care about eating another meal again. I went on a mindfulness course at the weekend and realised I needed to shift how I see food.

I feel my attitude has already changed and I've mentally coped well with the juicing. I love the feeling that I am only putting goodness into my body in the form of vegetables and fruits and I feel that it has been cleansing. It's been good to not worry about my next meal or what I'm putting in my mouth and I've got into the mindset of having me have the control over the food after years of feeling like food was controlling me.

I bought the 3 day detox app and I'm looking at what to do after I finish this detox. I want to continue to eat healthily and focus on nourishing my body long term. Jason Vale seems to have SO many books and I don't know which one to buy. I was thinking of the 5:2 book but I don't know if that is the best one.

Has anyone followed his plans long term? If so what do you recommend.

The fruit and veg, without juicing are much better for you, as the process breaks them down, so they are digested faster and you feel hungry sooner.

No matter how many glasses you have, fruit juice only counts as one of your five or more per day.

You might have a look at the Sirt food diet (buy the book cheap online) If you stick to the diet lose 7 lbs in 7 days plus change your dietary habits! You also stand to lose fat and gain muscle (or not lose muscle) However you need to get used to lots of kale, celery and rocket! on the plus side you get some dark choc and red wine from time to time.

    The book is very interesting.

At the start you get 3 juices per day (including all the fibre) and one meal.

If you are interested in juicing, i recommend watching 'Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead' o Netflix (or it may be on YT).

However, i feel that this 'diet' seems to be another one of your obsessions over food etc.
Have you been diagnosed as having an Eating Disorder? I suspect you must have been, as you say you used to binge and purge.

Your liver/kidneys do a perfectly good job of 'detoxing' your body, and no diet can do this for you.

However, all that being said, i do understand how much easier it is to take food out of the equation and just juice instead.
When i eat healthier, i always feel better. I cut out all junk, convenience foods, all dairy, alcohol, caffeine etc..but cant maintain it!

    Keep us updated!

EDIT- here is the juice recipes page from the 'Fat Sick and Nearly Dead' documentary that I talked about http://www.rebootwithjoe.com/recipes/
  • Thanks.

WanttobeSE, no, I've not been diagnosed with an ED. I first started binging and purging (very rarely) in October, started counselling (paid privately without notifying Dr as didn't want labelled) later that month. The counselling was not just about my issues with food but we did touch on it a few times and the counsellor didn't feel I had an Eating Disorder. She did feel I was using food as a comfort and then body shaming when actually I was still only a size 10 and in a healthy weight range. She felt it was an issue of self esteem and the way I had been raised (Mum recovered anorexic, Aunt a bulimic, they sent me to Slimming World aged 8 when I weighed less than 5 stone, fed me Weight Watchers foods, diet bars etc). I have only binged and purged a handful of times. I want to stop it in its tracks before getting a full blown ED. I was binging regularly (not purging) and it had got to the point of being every single day and the only way I could think of solving it was purging. It felt like food was controlling me.

You are right, I think juicing could just be another obsession. I generally am extremely strict with myself but got in bad habits over the past year. I think the binging could be to do with being too strict and basically on a diet every single day since the age of 8.

    Today was my first day back on food. I honestly felt so awful on the 3 day detox that I couldn't function. I was exhausted, having to sleep during the day, was aggressive (unlike me), slurred speech, dizziness etc. I also only lost 1lb of weight! Anyway, despite the physical side effects, I found it did help mentally and today I've just let myself eat what I want..which turned out to be;

B: Porridge cooked in water with cinnamon and topped with bio-live natural yogurt, blueberries and 1 tsp of honey. Decaf Tea (no sugar, dash of milk).

Snack: Apple and decaf coffee made with milk (which I gave up on after 3 sips because, after years of being a decaf coffee addict, it suddenly tasted vile).

L: Vine Ripened Tomato and Lentil Soup, 8 plain tortilla chips.

    Snack: Pear and Decaf Tea.

Dinner: Salmon Fillet baked in oven with Cajun spice sprinkled on top. Tomato based sauce made with tinned tomatoes, less than a tsp olive oil, garlic, ginger, chilli, paprika, mustard seeds, red onion, orange pepper and lots of spinach. 60g brown rice with lime and coriander on top.

Drank mainly water. Sparkling water with dinner.

If I'm hungry before bed I'll most likely have either cut up veg and a small snack sized pot of reduced fat hummus or a banana and a rice cake or two with some herbal tea. Depends on what I fancy.

So...that's me "not on a diet", just eating what I felt like and tbh its not all that unhealthy really. I enjoyed all my food and wasn't obsessed over it, hungry, or dominated by cravings so if I can take one day at a time and keep up eating well, I should be ok. I honestly feel it's the "on a diet" mentality which makes me binge and also hating my body. It's more a psychological issue than anything else. If I can deal with that I should be ok. I've just always had a fear that if I wasn't "on a diet", I'd be huge.

    Anyway, thanks for the advice.

Sounds like you eat reasonably healthy anyway, so dont need to do anything to 'detox' you.

I have just switched over to decaf tea as well, and am surprised that it tastes just the same as regular. The Lidl one was cheap and tastes very similar to the twinings!

Thanks, I'd eat healthy until I'd go on a binge and then it would be McDonald's Breakfast, Cherry Coke, Kettle Chips, Haribos and a Cadburys chocolate bar on top of a normal days eating. Or I'd think stuff the diet and by myself I'd go to a takeaway for a gluten free fish and chips, pizza, Chinese or Indian and then come home and eat chocolate or crisps or fizzy drinks and lately it was happening almost every day and I was also having a mocha or sugary latte everyday from Starbucks or somewhere similar which is basically like having another full meal calorie-wise!

I switched to decaf about 4 years ago, although I do drink green teas which contain caffeine. I agree, I don't notice the difference. Coffee is a different matter but I managed to find ones I liked and, if I'm out, I'll just have a caffeinated one as I've never found a decent decaf blend. Costa do a special blend that's low caffeine if you ask but their normal decaf is awful. I love the Twinnings and PGTips Decaf which I get on offer but never tried Lidl's but after your recommendation, I will pick some up next time I'm in.

Just going to take it one step at a time. I'm upping exercise that I enjoy and cutting out the guilt and hoping it all works out somehow!

I have stopped with the Starbucks too, i tend to have an Earl Grey instead of a sugary Latte. Makes me feel that i am still getting a nice drink but without the cals/fat/sugar.

I am a bit like you then- i eat healthy most of the time, but then i go on a binge and eat loads of crap :(

I am trying to low carb at the moment, looking forward to seeing how that goes!

Hope the low carb goes well :T. You are braver than me, I love my carbs but I think part of that is a cultural thing with me. Rice is a staple of our diet, along with potatoes. I measure my brown rice in an old fry-light cap now (do the same with my porridge oats) and weigh my pasta (60g) on the scales. I've gone off potatoes recently but I tend to have two medium sized ones or mix with swede if I'm having mash or cottage/shepherds pie. I quite like sweet potato chips, baked in the oven.

Fingers crossed its going okay so far. I've had a couple of coffees out, between today and yesterday but I've opted for plain cappuccino with no sugar or any extras. It's pretty much the only milk I'm getting and I am a bit worried about my calcium levels, though I know I'll be getting some in my veg and fruit. I really like Earl Grey, you are right it does feel like a treat.

I promised myself I wouldn't go on the scales but I did this morning. I've actually lost 2lbs over the past three days and I'm eating what I want and not dieting. Just making easy, sustainable changes. And somehow, because there's no real "restriction", there is no impulse to binge. If I really wanted something I'd probably have it. This is the longest that I haven't binged in a long time. Just hope it lasts!

I am missing the juices but couldn't exist solely on them so I might add in a juice a day. Only problem is, my less than a week old juicer broke and I've lost the receipt!
