I've always been adamant I don't want to remarry so if I suddenly did a u-turn, and then started heavily working on our finances, I think my partner would be pretty hurt (and suspicious haha)

I get it. I suppose it also explains why you are concentrating on these worries of self-provision.

But if you are together enough to have children, you really SHOULD be married. You probably would have been worse off last time if you hadnt been?

Basically, every single study out there says for children, their parents being married will make them better off int he long term financially. this is very important. Of course, if you didnt have children it would not be so very important.

Plus being married is a legal contract Which means lots of things will be better for BOTH of you int he long term. Do your children have different parents? Not being married could mean a break up of the family after your (untimely of course) death?

Being married means sharing your tax allowance. Right now your partner would get an extra 1K of PA to reduce his tax bill by over 200 quid. Not to mention inheritance. Do you have a will? Will inherit from you w/o one if married, will inherit nothing if you dont (and vice versa which is more important to you).

Your and his pensions, have you filled out your expressions of wishes? Extremely important if not married re survivor benefits.

Basically you need to look into it, and discuss it with your partner. They might want to be married too when they find out it is better for all of your family.
