Nationwide for FTB

Hi all, was just wondering if anyone can share any experience/opinions on how Nationwide have been as a lender for them? We are looking to apply to them based on that they seem rather generous on affordability (we wouldn't look for the maximum they were offering on the calculator ) and that they seem to take bonuses into consideration but I just wondered how others had found them?

I appreciate the consensus on here is to find a broker but it's not a definite we will buy yet so I wouldn't want to waste their time and our money, we may still move back in with family for a few months to up the deposit a few thousand and see if the market miraculously floods with no-longer-wanted BTL's... Perhaps not the latter but can live in hope!

Nationwide are currently very erratic, they could be quick and sensible, they could be slow and painful. You don't know what you're going to get until it's too late either.

Their problem is they have too many inexperienced staff and a ridiculous departmental underwriting system.

Your best bet is to discuss with a broker, if you're concerned with money use one that only charges on successful application

We've just used Nationwide very successfully for our mortgage, but their recommended solicitor was beyond awful. We used their solicitor and saved around £1000 compared to using a good local solicitor, but we regretted that decision many times and almost lost our completely chain-free purchase due to their incompetence. Luckily, Nationwide were very helpful and managed to push things through.

  • through a broker they have been fine, just slow but I am unsure if that is my fault.

Told mortgages approved subject to valuation, that was booked then I asked if they could do the homebuyers survey. I wasn't told that the valuation was cancelled to be rebooked for the 2 to be completed at the same time. I had been chasing the outcome of the valuation for over a week until I was updated. Valuation and survey were booked weeks in advanced too so its very frustrating now waiting. Only good thing is that they charge much less for survey that others and I have no rush from my chain.
  • I've been a customer of Nationwide banking for a long time. Did previously have a mortgage with them, but it was a re-mortgage due to the previous lender fixed term coming to an end. I had no issues with them and as my banking was with them then making overpayments was as easy as moving money between accounts via their online banking website.
