about £10k-ish, probably slightly less, but more than £8k

56k-11.6k-3360=£41k is your current taxable, the threshold for 40% is about £32-£33k, so would need to put £8-9k into AVC (if avc contributions are before tax) to avoid 40%

is there a website calculator somewhere that would show this formally? I'm sure many people have the same/similar question.

ah, ok. i think i've worked it out.

£56k less my PA of £11,000 for 2016/17 would be £45k.
Basic 6% contribution of £3,360 makes this £41,640.
To stay in basic rate tax band of £32k id need to make AVCs of £9,640 in the year, so about £800 per month.

Does this take into account salary sacrifice arrangements though? I'm guessing not....
