I did it!

As of 10.30 this morning I am bankrupt!

Had a terrible night's sleep, got up earlyish and went to the court for just before 9.30. The admin officer was lovely, they asked me to fill a form out for remission of the court fee so I got that back (though I'll have to pay it should they decided I could have afforded it) then I swore an affidavit and waited while she processed my application. I was the only person there (apart from my mum as moral support). She then explained that the judge would fit me in between hearing cases so I might have to wait a little while, and what would happen re seeing the judge and took me downstairs to a waiting room with a coffee machine.
Then the usher took me through to the court room and told me to sit about 2 rows back, but the judge (who was older than I expected, though I have no idea why I thought he'd be younger) said I could sit nearer if I liked. He asked me if I had any questions for him and if I understood the seriousness of bankruptcy and its consequences, to which I replied yes, then he said the form was filled in correctly and so he was making me bankrupt. This all took maybe 2 minutes!

Next he handed me my file and I went back to the usher and then the admin officer. She explained that she would do the paperwork and then put me on the phone to the OR. This she did, and I have a phone interview in the last week of September. I asked if I could open a new account and she said that was fine.

And that was it. TBH I wasn't expecting anything too traumatic, having read other people's experiences on here, but it was almost an anticlimax. I went for brunch with my mum and had a huge greasy fryup because I was starving, then wondered round town and went to the library etc. but then I suddenly started to feel really flaked out - I guess the after effect of adrenalin or something. So I'm at home now and have phoned the Co-op to open a new account - she was lovely when i said I'd just been made bankrupt and said that the application has gone through fine but that it might take a couple of weeks for me to receive the details.

Very well done Cinnabar - hope the OR interview goes just as well. :T :T
I am NOT, nor do I profess to be, a Qualified Debt Adviser. I have made MANY mistakes and have OFTEN been the unwitting victim of the the shamefull tactics of the Financial Industry.
If any of my experiences, or the knowledge that I have gained from those experiences, can help anyone who finds themselves in similar circumstances, then my experiences have not been in vain.

  • Hi Cinnabar

Congratulations on getting through it unscathed LOL. My experience was much same, (see my thread), now we can both start getting on with things. I have to wait to get a letter from OR about an interview, could be 4 weeks they said oh well.

    Once again ... congratulations!

I don't want to hijack this thread but what are some of the bumpy bits for Cinnabar to look forward to? I'm contemplating BR and don't want to find any nasty shocks.

  • FYP sorry didnt mean to sound alarmest:o badly phrased.
Only things you need to ensure you do save for MOT,road tax, emergency repairs. That kind of thing.Im a swine:o in the past I would look at money and go Oh what the hell I can save /put it back next month OR PUT ON CREDIT
.I will spend it on x now.
Well now I dont have credit and I cant afford to put back next month so have to ensure the money for mot stays put until mot.Road tax is a stamp every month, xmas is a stamp on a card at tesco or Morrison each week.
As fo emegencis well dvd players do brake sometimes you need a new tyre that kind of thing. So a monthly sum put by for them.
So as I said a few bumps but hopefuly little ones.

My main concern I think would be having to sell the house and renting somewhere. I've seen people on here struggle to find somewhere to rent once BR.
