Not looking for medical advice, but experiences.
Normaly have uneventful dentist visits with little dental issues.
Had a normal check up visit.
Suddenly Deep aching jaw pain from hinge and right to my lower front teeth. Went to back to the dentist and was told my wisdom tooth had woken up and was pushing all that side teeth causing the pressure. Told to wait it out and if it's not resolved in a few weeks she will refur me to the hospital.
Then I get pain in my top teeth on the same side. Back to dentist Loads of X-rays and found an abscess.
Been on antibiotics for over a week but no change and I am in serious pain. Whole side of my face has swollen my mouth is full of ulcers from the X-ray plate thingy. I can't tell if it's the wisdom tooth or the abscess.
Not kidding the pain is quite somthing else and as the wisdom tooth ache in my jawbone is not touched by pain killers.
To my question
Would you have expected the antibiotics to have worked by now? I don't want to take up more of the dentist time if it's just a waiting game as I have had three visits in as many weeks.

Paracetamol doenst touch pain like this. Ask for something a lot stronger.
I suffered for years with back pain and was just given paracetamol.... till the pain was unbearable, they then gave me Tramadol,,,, the relief when it kicked in was pure bliss.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
It sounds as though it has been getting worse rather than better since you started on antibiotics. If that happened to me, I would at least ring the dentist and ask if I should come in.But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,Had the whole of their cash in his care.

Thanks McKneff,
Sorry to hear of your back pain.
I took some heavy duty stuff but as a family we have a sensitivity to pain killers so it just sent me a bit loopy and gave me a cracking headache as well as a queasy stomach.....
and still didn't touch the jaw pain.
I will call the dentist today. Please note I have a cognitive disability - as such my wording can be a bit off, muddled, misspelt or in some cases i can miss out some words totally...0 -
Could it be a hyper extended jaw - from a too wide yawn ?
I did that last year and the pain was excruciating
ie) nerve damage to the hinge joint rather than the teeth themselves
Worth checking.................0 -
My first tooth abscess many years ago was excruciating and the antibiotics - amoxicillen - did nothing. Went back to the dentist and he gave me erythromycin which worked immediately.
I've since discovered that for amoxicillen to work for me I have to have a much stronger dose. It was the first time I'd ever been prescribed it, so it wasn't that I'd built up a tolerance to it.I want my sun-drenched, wind-swept Ingrid Bergman kiss, Not in the next life, I want it in this, I want it in this

Update:
I was sent away with a flea in my ear that i shouldn't have booked another appointment until this course of antibiotics are finished but they did change the antibiotics from amoxicillin to metronidazole (sp?)
No change and last night it was so bad i didn't know where to put myself.
I am due back to work today (they are understaffed due to leave) and i feel bad i am not going in. but i am having to lie down with a heated pad on my face for 40 mins out of every 60!
Weirdly it drops to manageable and tolerable a dull throb over night, and during the day it eases off as soon as i lay down so i think it's being upright that's causing it to be irritated.
off to lay down for a bit. Please note I have a cognitive disability - as such my wording can be a bit off, muddled, misspelt or in some cases i can miss out some words totally...0 -
DO NOT EVER PUT HEAT AGAINST A DENTAL INFECTION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The reason it is not getting better is because you are doing this!!
You are incubating the bugs and causing them to multiply at many times their usual rate!!!! The antibiotics don't have a chance. How to find a dentist.
1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.0 -
Hi toothsmith,
I did not know that. You learn somthing new everyday.
As it was on Thursday night I couldn't bear it anymore and drove a hour to my old dentist.
They did a big set of X-rays and found that all the pain was originating from the wisdom tooth. The abscess they thought was at the top was just referred pain.
Changed antobiotics again onto erythromycin double dose four times a day. A better prescription painkiller prescribed and a letter done to the hospital to get a removal ASAP.
I was so thankful as soon as started taking the above the pain eased up significantly. Please note I have a cognitive disability - as such my wording can be a bit off, muddled, misspelt or in some cases i can miss out some words totally...0
