Last time I went to a laundrette the basic wash lasted 17 minutes and included a pre-wash, spin, main wash, 3 rinses and a final spin.

I can't see how that would A) give a satisfactory wash B) Get rid of all the detergent. Not to mention the low final spin speed to ensure you spend extra in the dryers.

BTW the longest possible wash was 38 minutes in the largest machines so still not great.

Any comments from those that use laundrettes?

Are you comparing to a machine you would typically use at home?

Industrial strength machines work so much better and quicker. They fill the machine quicker using already heated hot water and get to work on the actual cleaning of the clothes sooner. Most home machines are cold fill only and heat the water using electricity which takes quite a long time.

    Xmas Saver!
I find that can get a single duvet in the washing machine - doubles I wash at the start before they go on the bed - stored in bin bags in the loft. We invested in better quality a couple of yrs ago x

doesn't it go lumpy if the machine is too small?

Mine takes far longer than that and spins reasonably fast. I tend to give the winter one about 20 minutes in the drier.

I can't say that I use laundrettes that much but the one thread that runs through all the times that I have is the generally poor quality of the clean and what appears to be laundry detergent left in the clothes due to an insufficient rinsing i.e on the final rinse you can see see suds despite using the recommended amount of detergent and clothes feel a bit stiff and rough.

My home machine a Miele WKR does a standard rinse with final spin in about 26 minutes. The A rated 59 minute Power Wash does the same in around 13 minutes. I think I'm correct in saying that it only does 2 rinses.. Its hard to think that a laundrette machine can do the same job in around 5 minutes but do 3 rinses with short spins between and a final spin.

You are not going to heat that much water to 60 degrees in 59 minutes....Checking the manual....that's 59 minute wash cycle is a 40 degree wash with 5kg of washing...not enough to kill dust mites and not large enough to take a double duvet unless it's a summer duvet weighing under 2.5kg.

The best cycle for a 60 degree wash filling it with 9kg of washing it the standard cotton wash which will take 2 hours and 4 minutes which is big enough to take a 4.5kg double winter duvet. It'll use 1.45kWh and 65 litres of water.

Laundrette machines fill using already hot water they don't heat the water.

O.K, so taking your figures its still hard to believe that a 17 minute wash in a laundrette is the same let alone better than a 2 hr 4 minute home wash.

I admit I've never washed any down product (3 sleeping bags and an All-Season duvet) in a laundrette as its all way too expensive but as I've said the clothes that I have have been poorly washed/rinsed compared to my home machine. I can't see why that would be any different for a down product.

I don't think the duvet would fit in the small industrial strength machine that takes 17 minutes for a full wash/rinse/spin cycle. It doesn't take long to put 10-15 litres of water into a small machine....maybe less than 1 minute. The large machine in my local laundrette takes around 40 minutes on a full wash/rinse/spin cycle. It takes about 2 minutes to fill the machine with water. I've not timed it exactly that part is just an estimate.

If you think about hand washing a small amount of clothes it only takes about 15 minutes to wash/rinse and wring out a handful of clothes in a warm bucket of water. Quite a bit of the time is spent filling the bucket with warm water.

Laundrette machine empties the water from the drum quicker, spins quicker. Everything is done quicker.

Just browsing a few sites for better figures. It also applies to the dryer it takes 10 minutes to dry an item in a large gas fired laundrette dryer but you would never get that in your small home electric dryer.
