When i was working a envelope was passed round, with a sheet of paper listing names of the people to pass it to (our office at one time had over 80 people), People signed the card then there names on the list. It was up to the individule to decide if they wanted to contribte any money.0

This reminds me of when I worked in a large office. Every week there would be collections going round for leaving presents, wedding presents etc. I always chipped in, thinking, never mind, I'll get something myself when I go! Then we all got made redundant and so I got nothing!
Personally I just chip in a pound or so, but then we're a close knit small company who all get on. If I was in a big firm I'd just give change - these things are only meant as a token and anyone specifying minimum amounts can get stuffed - how will they know what you put in anyway?'Never keep up with Joneses. Drag them down to your level. It's cheaper.' Quentin Crisp0 -
I used to work in a high school where at the end of every term about 15 staff left because it was a horrible place to work !
It got to point where when I used to make 8 muffins for each person leaving, each one with an iced letter on it so that they read , 'G O O D L U C K'.
For birthdays etc I'd do the same with 6 muffins with an appropriate message. For someone I really liked ie, the 6 people in my department - for their birthday I used to make a batch of chocolate brownies, pile them on a plate, put candles in them and present them like a birthday cake at lunchtime. I got known for doing this so never got hassled for donations because everyone knew that I did this.
It works out SO much cheaper than donating a few quid each time !!0 -
I used to work for a small company (18 employees) and we did the £1 for a birthday thing. Worked really well as we all got a nice pressie due to the fact we used to make the boss contribute more
But the best was the card - our lovely cleaner used to buy the packs of really cheap cards from the local market (so we weren't spending a fortune on a card) so the laugh was which one of the dodgy cards we would get with our lovely pressie. In fact the cheap card became more of an event than the pressie.

My last place had an un-official ban on this sorta thing. For the simple reason that it was embarrassing for those who couldn't afford it.
I wish we did. We're yet to have a team-meeting since I last posted. It's been cancelled twice due to most the team being on holiday or suffering from mysterious "illnesses" - no doubt they've all been going for interviews, like I've been doing! They did allow person to person gift giving, and cards at christmas, but no 'secret santa etc.
Oddly, we didn't have Secret Santa at my place last Christmas. Instead, we each purchased a gift for £5.00 and added it to a gift basket. We then had a draw and one person won the whole basket. I put a budget-range ABBA CD in there. I think it had four hits on it and the rest was obscure B-Sides - but it looked more expensive than £4.79!!!0
