A guy from Provident. My lowest amount creditor.

Are they the ones that collect weekly payments door to door?

Tell them you're dealing with Stepchange and they are to no longer visit your house to collect on the debt. Then follow that up in writing to Provident.
    :footie:
:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p
  • They already know. I've told them there is no point coming to my house but they don't seem to listen!
  • My nerves are all over the place and I don't even owe them that much. I'm getting over an anxiety based psychiatric condition and still feel quite shaky.

    Phil,

This guy from provident will be a self employed collector, working on there behalf, they don't get paid if they don't collect from you, that's why he`s been persistent.

Just don't engage with the guy at all, eventually he will get the message, if not, call 101 and get the old bill involved.

The good news is that you shouldn't have this problem with other creditors, once its filtered down the line you are working with stepchange it should quieten down, the letters and calls you are currently getting are computer automated, triggered by your non payment, so don't worry about it, its all perfectly normal.

  • Thank you. I am a big worrier in general and getting myself into this mess has really stressed me out. I procrastinated for a while but am finally starting to sort it out. Step Change reckon if I stick to the plan I will be debt free in 15 months.

Provident are usually very good but you (or your dmp provider) have to write to the Bradford office to ask them to withdraw the account from the local collector.

If you feel he is harassing you complain by letter or Email: pccsupport@provident.co.uk

They promise 'Once letter received by them they will contact local office to say about the agency involvement and transfer the account to be managed from head office. Agents will no longer call nor will letters be automatically generated.'
  • I just wish I hadn't got myself into this situation.

Don't beat yer self up about it phil.

I woke up one morning, ten years ago, without a penny to my name, and nearly sixty grand in debt, I had no idea how I got there, but I managed to sort it out.

Creditors are a lot more tolerant of your situation nowadays, then they were then, once it filters down the line that your going the DMP route, things will return to near normal, you'll just pay your monthly payment, and that'll be it, no hassle, just hang in there.

  • Thanks everyone for replying. I have been very silly but I KNOW my situation could have got more out of hand. My total debt is £2535 which may not seem a lot to some (it's all relative I guess?) but the level of worry I have experienced has been tremendous plus I didn't want my wife to know the situation I had got myself into. Hopefully the Step Change plan will be up and running soon and I can start to relax a bit.
  • Step Change have been in touch. My DMP has been set up and payments start on April 2nd. Can't wait to get back on track!
