Hi.
This isn't medical advice i'm after, but rather I just need help regarding the process as I never understand what to do.

GP said I need to carry out a 24 hour urine collection.
I think she mentioned something about getting the bottles from the hospital.
I collected a form from reception that said ''24 hour urine collection'' on it and then the receptionist gave me a small bottle to use (even though the Dr mentioned getting the bottle from the hospital)

I went home and see that I am supposed to use a very big bottle, so the receptionist gave me the little bottle by mistake?

If so, how do I get the bottle that I need?
Do I just walk into the hospital and ask a member of staff for a big bottle??

And then where do I drop it off after? the hospital? My GP surgery??

Every 12 months or so my husband has to do a 24 hour urine collection.

You collect the big bottle from the hospital and return it to the hospital for testing.

The little bottle is issued for the follow up appointment.

I just marched up to the receptionist at the desk and told them i needed a urine collection bottle.

Was it a straightforward 24hr urine collection, or one where they have chemicals added to the bottle? I've had to do one of the chemical ones and it was awful ... the worst smell ever ...

I'd ring the GP surgery and clarify.

The bottle is the size of those big containers you buy screenwash in so you def have the wrong one! I had to collect and return my bottle to the pathology dept of the local hospital.

I think it depends on the size of the hospital as to where you take it. At the nearest smaller outpatients hospital there is a small door in reception where i just put it and attached the slip the doctor had issued hubby.

My local A&E/all singing all dancing hospital i had to take it the path lab.

The chemicals in the 5ltr container are preservative.

By the way its best if you carry it into the hospital in a carrier bag... unlike me the first time.... i never felt such a wally walking round with a 5ltr bottle of pee in my hand. I never made that mistake again.:o

OP I haven't heard of a 24 hour urine collection, so can't help much, sorry, but a quick look on google images suggests you need something like this

When I was doing my research there were some projects that needed this.

It was not a happy day when someone brought their collection container in frozen!

It took ages to thaw, as it was well over 1.5 litres. We only actually needed 50ul to stick up the HPLC.

in the end we had to make them collect it again because the proteins had all sedimented out . Yuck.

I had to do this recently as part of tests for night sweats but lucky me I was asked to do it for 48 hours so they could do loads of tests.

You will need a big bottle purely because a little bottle, it won't fit. Go to the hospital pathology lab and they'll give it to you and you return it to them. But they say don't go to the loo directly int he bottle as the stuff they put in there can burn if it comes into contact. So you're supposed to use a jug or some such and then transfer that to the bottle.

It was not a fun weekend as of course, you cannot go to the loo outside the house (unless you're comfortable toting the bottle around with you) or you're only out for a short length of time and won't need the bathroom.

    Best of luck... :-)

I had to do this during pregnancy. Definitely a huge gallon size container. I also bought a large plastic measuring jug (it had a spout) and a funnel from wilkos. Helped a lot with the collection and decanting!
    Loving the sunny days!

    Thanks guys.
So not only did the GP give me teh wrong bottle, but now that i've completed the 24 test this morning, i'm starting to think that the girl at the hospital lab has also done it wrong!

There was no 'acid preservative' in the bottle and it appears that there should have been (if my research is correct) as it is a ''24 Hour Urine Catecholamine Collection'', and the Catecholamine's deteriorate without a preservative.
