I have been charged a fee of 3% for an online transaction because I am informed is that banks make this charge and it is passed on to me the customer. I know there is a charge on credit cards but not on Debit cards.
The card used was my Barclays Connect Card. Does anyone know if this is true if so is it as high as 3%.

Any merchant can if he wishes charge you a fee for the use of either a debit or a credit card. The latter is more common, but it isn't unknown with debit cards.
It's not really relevant whether that's what Barclays actually charge the merchant - with debit cards it's usually a flat fee per transaction rather than a percentage, but there may be a monthly charge as well.0 -
I'ts very unusual to charge for debit card transactions (unless you're Ryanair) but the merchant can do it. However, he has to tell you before you enter into the transaction.0

You can be charged for cash transactions on a debit card, such as buying foreign currency or funding a gambling account. Here I go again on my own....0

No, you're thinking of where credit cards charge you a cash withdrawal fee in those two instances. You can be charged for cash transactions on a debit card, such as buying foreign currency or funding a gambling account.
Gambling deposits and, AFAIK, foreign currency purchases (as long as you are charged in GBP) are two cases where there is never normally a charge by the debit card provider. Though, as said before, the merchant can make a charge any time as long as you are informed beforehand.0 -
No - I'm thinking of the instances when my bank and not the retailer has charged me for making such transactions on my debit card. Here I go again on my own....0
