New bed and/or mattress

I am thinking of replacing my bed with either of these:

The top one has sprung slats which I've heard are good. Also the slats are 2 inches apart.
The second one has solid wooden slats.

There's nothing actually wrong with my current bed, apart from the slats seem very wide apart (they're metal poles 6 inches apart). Its always been uncomfortable. I find it far too hard, despite the mattress being medium/soft and having a thick mattress protector. I've read that any mattress will be ruined if used on a bed with the slats far apart as it will cause it to bulge between them.

I'm unsure whether to replace the bed or mattress or both.
I'd appreciate any opinions. I'd hate to buy one and find its not much different to my current bed.

The only way to know if you are likely to find something comfortable is to try it - or try something as close as possible to what you plan to buy. Go and lie on a few beds(!) and talk to the sales assistants - John Lewis are excellent.

I'd take a cheap wooden bed over a cheap metal bed every day of the week.

The metal bed will have horrible cheap sprung slats that WILL break, either the slat themselves or the plastic cap that holds the slat in place will break.

At least with a wooden bed if you break something on it, it can be easily fixed.

I doubt the side rails on the metal bed will be that strong either.

    Cheap beds are not good.
