Hi sorry if this is a daft question but new to using coupons.
Is it possible to use coupons on self service machines?
If so does it work if you havent brought 'actual' item?
thanks

In theory - certainly at Sainsburys - they will work without buying product.
Once you have finished scanning your shop , till will ask you if you have any coupons
However if you start trying to use a lot , the person supervising the tills should notice - if they are doing their job correctly. And if coupon doesnt scan correctly in the first couple of attempts, then they will certainly come across and have a look at what you are doing

Sainsburys self scans don't accept coupons if you don't buy the named product or certain brands. The assistant will try to put the barcode number in and won't accept if not the right product.
Then again, I had it where I bought the item on a coupon for extra 100 Nectar points and it doesn't recognise the coupon. So go to the CSD, to put the points on. The assistant on CSD comments not again and found out all the coupons issued for that product don't work.
They could manually knock the value of the coupon, but risk disciplinary action.
Sainsburys allow customers to scan up to £2.50 without assistance.
Asda, any amount needs assistance! This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

I have noticed recently that when I spend around £90 on shopping at the Tesco self service machine, it will allow up to around £10.00 worth of vouchers without assistance (mind you I have never tried NOT to use the correct coupon and have only spent that amount in the big stores). But if I spend a lot less say a fiver it will ask for assistance, even if its a £1 Coupon. I'm Not Sure the exact amount you have
to spend when it starts accepting £10 Worth of coupons Though.I may not be the brightest star in the sky but I still shine. Please be gentle0 -
In terms of Tesco I find it tends to accept a handful of coupons now before manual over-rides are needed. At one time I'd process two or three before it needed a member of staff to attend to me.
In terms of Sainsbury's I've had extra Nectar points coupons and bought a qualifying item but the Self Service checkout has refused it. A few times I've been to the Customer Service desk but I tend not to bother now; I'd rather earn any extra points using their My Coupons website! It's not your credit score that counts, it's your credit history. Any replies are my own personal opinion and not a representation of my employer.0 -
Earlier this month, I used Tesco scan n go and had two coupons -£3 off £20 and £5 fresh flowers coupon from Tesco Orchard. Spent £21 before coupons.
I needed assistance for the latterThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
I haven't had any coupons from Tesco in ages (other than Clubcard vouchers that I doubled up online) but the last time I did, you needed assistance if using more than two coupons in a transaction.
Recently in Asda (since they changed how their tills deal with APG) even the self checkout assistants just direct you to the Customer Service Desk/a manned checkout. It makes sense that you do need assistance for any voucher though, since the only ones they issue are APG, of which it is a condition that you present the original receipt to redeem the voucher.
Coupons won't work if you haven't bought the actual item, even sometimes if you have. Recently I had a buy any Always coupon from Sainsbury's, and when the checkout wouldn't accept it, the staff tried arguing that it wasn't the pictured item. Eventually it was overriden when I pointed out that it did say any.0
