I am doing North Run at the end of month and me and friend want to go via train. Have priced it up and it comes in at the moment at about £90 return each  I know I've read somewhere about how you can get cheaper fares but my search hasn't thrown much up. Can anyone help?

I've heard the best thing is to look at getting several tickets for each journey - something to with pricing between local stations. So for instance if you're travelling from Station A to Station E through B C and D you'd look at getting tickets from A to B, B to C etc. Bit of a faff but can offer good savings apparently.
How flexible can you be regarding dates/times? it really pays to travel at funny times of the day or look a day earlier/later if you can, particularly if you're travelling to an event which a lot of other people might also be attending via train. Also if you get singles instead of a return you'll very often get a cheaper fare these days - I just went to London and back for 10 quid each way because I took singles - the cheapest return at the same time was over 40.0 -
If you look in the travel trips and holidays board theres a whole section on breaking your journey down and lots of illustrations on best ways to do it xx0

Thanks for all your advice, I managed to find a link in the end and have booked a journey by breaking it down into three single fare journeys for the fantastic amount of £22 return!!!!!:j :j :j
I have booked after peak times and it was a bit of faff but well worth the savings I have made. Yay
