Hi all, me and my partner are actually getting married abroad but having a big family party back home. Have found a hall we want to hire that does have a bar but we would need to get someone to provide the staff and drinks for the bar. I was thinking of taking our own drink, and letting everyone bring their own, will provide some wine, beer, soft drinks etc but we are on a tight budget so could not afford to buy it all. Do you think it is acceptable to expect people to bring their own drinks, if not does anybody know how you would go about getting the bar manned etc and rough cost of this. Manythanks

No harm in aksing guests to bring own bottles of wine or a crate of beer or 2.0

I'd ask them to bring booze but not expect a present too.
I'd put on the invitation something along the lines of "We have everything we need, but we know you're all thirsty, so please bring a bottle or two to help us celebrate"
Make sure you have plenty of ice etc. I'd supply some fizz for a toast, a few bottles of red/white and some lager (plus some soft drinks). Should cover most people.0 -
Also, if you order wine from Majestic (they do have some very good offers, and I've never had an awful bottle from them), they delivery for free, will lend you glasses and ice and chiller bins for free. They'll also take back any unopened bottles for a full refund.0

Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.

I actually think its a fab idea. As a gust i'd much prefer to be able to buy my own at Tesco/Aldi than have to pay top whack for drinks in the hotel.
Just remember - Lots of Ice, lots of mixers and some plastic cups etc. Also make sure there are loads of bottle openers.
Good luck. It sounds fab! x0 -
Thanks everyone, feel better about asking people to bring their own now. Have started buying wine will get some soft drinks and beer nearer the time. MandM90 would not ask for presents anyway so all good. HappyMJ it is going to be a Saturday night so probably not going to get a member of barstaff xrecent wins-3 x anchor, a bag of skittles, 50 spud shillings, A tassimo mug :T0

Have a chat with your local pub landlord. They usually have staff with a personal licence that might want some work when the pub itself isn't busy....i.e not Friday or Saturday night. I would say about £10 per hour should be just about right. You would have to pay for travel as well as bar staff normally are paid minimum wage, can't afford to run a car and live within walking distance of the pub they work at. A taxi shouldn't cost too much.
You would only need a license if you were going to charge for the drinks0
