Looks like you don't need extra qualifications. https://nationalcareersservice.direct.gov.uk/advice/planning/jobprofiles/Pages/TrainDriver.aspx

It's VERY difficult to get into...!0 -
Often it's easier to get into by working as a CSA (Customer Service Assistant) or similar and then you would apply internally for driver. That is the only way it works on the Underground. Other lines work differently but really it's the easiest way.0

One of my husbands friends is a train driver. When we have chatted about his job he's said only certain companies train the drivers. You need to go to the company who runs the trains on the track he wants to work on. No education is needed, but the tests, concentration, engineering and others are incredibly difficult to pass. Most fail, in fact some pass to get the job and then fail the end of the training.0

Virgin Trains are one.
London Underground another.
If this 28 year old male has a car driving licence and regularly drives, that's a help.

The railway careers forum is a good place to start and also if you know people already in the job they will know buzz words these companies look for.
I am 24, female and about 4-6 weeks form finishing my training and being out on my own.
I love the job0
