I think, when you balance out the total cost/loss potential, over the last 10 years - then consider what she's got out of it (companionship, somebody to do the endless little jobs, transport/driver) it seems quite 'fair' on balance.

Even if he weren't paying her rent, and was costing her £40/week (£2k/year), compared to the alternatives it looks like a bargain.

If he were a fraudster he'd have moved in on all her money many years before this point.

Financially -v- services rendered, she's come out of it well I think.

When said in a hurry "£20k's missing and he didn't pay rent" it seems like a scammer .... but if you've ever lived with somebody who needed the sort of help/assistance/companionship that older people want you'd soon realise he was a bargain.

Having a random stranger pop in for 1 hour/day to check you're all right can cost £15/visit.... £100/week. And they're not actually "useful" except for an hour's companionship. Certainly not there 24/7 at the drop of a hat and on a whim to lift, carry, fix things. Change lightbulbs, close the curtains, check the dripping tap's OK, give the door a shave/change a lock etc.

You'll probably find that she told him to stop paying her rent years ago as he was doing so much running around for her. That's entirely plausible for older people who value the companionship/help.

I can't even responded because I'm so angry! He has taken advantage because she has said he has taken advantage she has never really had her won financial responsibility as her husband took care of it all before he died after that she lived with my mother in law but wanted to move back to her family home. I don't know when and how this man moved in but YES HE HAS TAKING THE ABSOLUTE !!!! OUT OF AN ELDERLY WOMEN WHO OFFERED HIM A PLACE TO LIVE!!!

My Mum had dementia and, as is quite common with this illness, she regularly asserted that people had stolen things from the house when they hadn't.

It's possible that she had a very happy arrangement with this man whereby he cared for her, took her out to appointments and maintained the house in lieu of rent but that her illness has affected the way she now views this.

Why are you more angry than her blood relatives seem to be? I think their way forward is the correct one.

Don't forget there are 2 elderly people involved here and whatever the rights and wrongs of the case the health of your husband's nan comes first and I don't think dragging the law into this will help her at all and may actually do her some harm.

......he has now left her property after the threat of police was mentioned.....

I suppose, your family will now have to employ a full time live-in carer to attend to the old lady's needs.

Let us know if you find someone who will work for bed and board and some 40 quid per week pocket money, but on top of it is also willing to throw his/her own car and free petrol into the bargain.

Anyway just thought I'd ask her so if someone has a good reply I can show my mother in law and insist they go to the police. Thanks in advance

The police will require more than a 'good reply' supplied by a forum member - they will require evidence which substantiates your claim.
