1.8 kg tin of tuna - what do I do?

Hi

I god a bargain a few weeks ago, one of the large industrial size tins of tune for a couple of quid, I think weight 1.8kg, drained weight 1.2 kg. Looking for ideas as to what to do with it, was thinking a pasta bake, but that isn't going to use up even a quarter.

I would like to make a lot of meals in advance and freeze them, and am looking for high protein meals, but cannot find a good selection of recipes....and I don't want my cat to get ever fatter, or to develop a taste for tuna.

Tuna quiche would use some up.

A tuna fish pie would work.

You could pot up portions of the tuna and lob it into the freezer until you've got a use for it.

I think that's what I would do perhaps in those soup freezer bags so it will take up less room.Once frozen it would be in a 'suspended' state until you wanted to use portions of it.Sounds like you bagged a bargain there

I would do as JackieO suggested. I would add though, beware of freezer burn, which I find affects tuna, so if you can't vac-pack it, use it within about 3 months.
I'd also do something like defrosting a portion to make sandwiches over a couple of days.
I also think a fish chowder makes a lovely substantial meal, and works very well with tuna.

    What brand is it?
  • tuna fish cakes ~ I think I've see a recipe online for ones where you can make them up and freeze them prior to cooking. mix the tuna with some cooked mashed potato, add some flavourings (red onion, spring onion, chives, chilli sauce, mustard etc). dip in egg, toss in breadcrumbs and either shallow fry or over bake. I've lots of tins of tuna from my in-laws so did a web search for tuna fish cakes for inspiration

cheers all. Am going to go for a pasta bake, some fishcakes, and try the mouse as well, then freeze the rest.

Its branded tuna (Princes I think) and I have noticed ASDA occasionally do these large tins dirt cheap - I assume they buy it in for sandwiches maybe...
