How about bar work? It sounds as though you enjoy pubs and clubs, why not get paid for socialising? Agree that you should also be looking for promotion or a better paid job elsewhere. Good luck on your DFW journey. :)

Thanks for the suggestion but I've never fancied pub or club work. Looks like too much effort to me. All those punters to serve and the hours you must keep. I think I'd much rather be on the other side enjoying myself! And work in the hospitality trade tends to pay poorly does it not..?

I'd like to try something like helping with adult literacy or people with sensory impairment or learning difficulties. I was thinking about looking for any work/courses so I can move into those sorts of jobs long term. Poorly paid clerical work isn't really cutting it for me...

Hello my lovely! (Great user name by the way!)

So job number one: stop fannying about throwing random fivers at that 17.5% card and pay off the full £31 next pay day - or sooner if you can manage it. :D Then cancel the account. Done. And Dusted!

Number two. Gym: Cancel it. 2b Sort out the CC situation. Personally I'd leave the Halifax where it is unless a) the MBNA interest rate will be lower than 6.95% in June or b) you think you'll have the full amount cleared by June. or C) you know for sure you'll be able to get another 0% deal by June. You could snowball it to see what it says at http://www.whatsthecost.com/snowball.aspx

Number three: Work out a food budget that's lower than the amount your currently spend - and stick to it. Simple huh? ;) Check out the Grocery challenges on Moneysaving Old Style for ideas and Dbelle and MrsMicawber are doing a feed 2 for a month on £60 challenge which is worth a look as well.

Number Four: I'm not convinced of the wisdom of lashing out all that cash for a bike hon - even if it is "a bargain" . Plus it'll cost almost as much as you currently spend on transport to work now - at least for the next year so couldn't you spend £50-100 on a great bike from the local paper instead? (Oops. I've just seen you've already replied to this point.)

Number Five: Earn more money. Even a little bit will make a difference.

That's all I've got for now honeybun!

If you have student debt, you must have maybe studied? So formal qualifications should be on your CV?? Maybe you need to get some good advice on careers and how to "sell yourself". Can you sign up for some good recruitment services online? You never know? Your situation could all change in a short time

    Good luck :D

  • Why not transfer some of the Halifax balance that you know you'll be able to clear by June rather than all of it?

Have to say I completely agree with you about bar work - I prefer being on the other side of the counter too. Do keep thinking about what kind of full-time work you'd like to do long term and do consider one evening a week volunteering in adult literacy or working with people with learning difficulties. It can be fun, helping take groups of people to fun places like....pubs and clubs! :)

  • £101 sounds like a lot for a person living by themself in a one bed place. Are you getting the discount that single people get?
