So realistically how much more can you ask your future employer salary wise?
Let's say you are on X and the company is offering you above that but they had no budget.
Should you go 5k more, 10k, 15k? Even more?
Let's say the experience you have can place you in the higher ranges. If you can justify it, surely you should demand it?

If the company cannot afford to pay you the higher amount, how would it be sensible for (a) them to promise it anyway, and (b) you to take the job, presumably leaving an existing one, knowing that the company will struggle to pay you.
I guess there are exceptions, for example if you're bringing new business with you, or your experience and knowledge might reasonably increase the new employers business to the point that they will be able to afford the higher amount. I'm not sure how I'd react to someone "demanding" more money than I'm prepared to pay them - I suspect it would make me reluctant to employ them. But there is no right answer, as DR said, it's entirely down to circumstances.0
