On-air competitions

Options
Anyone else been selected to go on-air on the radio to win a prize and completely ballsed it up? I did just that this morning when I was asked a tiebreaker question and my answer was way off. The prize was a holiday and I'm gutted because I've been trying for years to win one and had I not been stressed I would have given a more sensible answer and had a decent shot at winning it but hey ho :(

  • Thanks for posting lilias. Very weirdly just after I posted this thread I checked my e-mails and found out I've won an overnight stay in a 5 star London hotel with first class train travel. I feel so lucky!

    Eighth Anniversary
Last year I had to go on a radio station to answer 3 questions which involved 3 different prizes - I felt so nervous and I knew as soon as I'd answered the first one that I'd got it wrong - luckily for me it was pre-recorded and the DJ sounded completely flustered - he said "I've been given the questions but nobody has given me the answers, really sorry but can you hang on a minute?" - he put me on hold for what seemed like ages and when he came back he apologised profusely - he asked the question again and I said "can I change my mind? He laughed and said yes so I gave a different answer which was the correct one and it all got edited so when it went on air it sounded like I got the question right first time.

I think I was just very lucky that day that the station ballsed things up and it was their way of apologising for what happened. So I managed to relax after that and got the other two questions right - but it is SO nerve-wracking knowing you are talking to a DJ and going to be on air!

Well done on your London prize, I'm sure it will be amazing!
  • That's why I don't do radio comps - I couldn't handle the stress ! :)

That's brilliant. The answer I gave sounded a lot like the actual answer and I was tempted to say that they had misheard me! Kind of wish I gave it a shot now!

Gets out quill pen - I remember when there were no premium rate or web entries and calls went live through to the studio.
I probably did dozens in the early eighties mainly on the now long defunct Radio West (yes it took the name from "Shoestring") and it definitely gets easier with a bit of practice but with most "local" radio stations now part of larger groups there far fewer just local radio competitions to have a go on and get used to it.

I'm awful on the phone, no way I could do that knowing other people are listening (which is why I like comps were you are informed of wins via email or post) :o I get embarrassed and nervous having to do simple things like ringing the doctors for an appointment- receptionist "so what is the reason for the appointment?" me " Err Errmm actually I'm ok, its not urgent sorry to bother you" *ends up in A&E with multiple organ failure two days later* you'd think I'd get over my phone phobia after that :(

I won one last year, when they phoned they woke me up and I'd been out the night before, I got put on air and made a right hash of it - I didn't have a clue who they were or what they were on about - I just sounded really thick, and after the call they put me through to someone to take my details, he clearly wasn't pleased with me, not just my performance, but the fact that I lived out of the network zone. I think if you are going to enter comps that are live on air ones, you should at least remember that our online entries are in place of the text route - that's what threw me because they asked me on air when I'd sent the text, and all I could think of was I rarely enter text comps, so duh, errrr, ummm.

I hate speaking to people on the phone anyway.
    TOP MONEYSAVING TIP

Make your own Pot Noodles using a flower pot, sawdust and some old shoe laces. Pour in boiling water, stir then allow to stand for two minutes before taking one mouthful, and throwing away. Just like the real thing!

I'm the same, I hate speaking on the phone and usually avoid it at all costs! I actually entered the competition without realising I had to go on-air :o To be honest, I would have chickened out if it wasn't for the fact I so desperately want to win a holiday and thought I had a pretty good shot :( Lesson learnt, next time I'll make sure I read the T&C's more carefully!
