Informal discussion - job advert

Hi there
When applying for jobs and seeing a position you are interested in has anyone ever responded to adverts which welcome an informal call to discuss, i.e. "If you would like an informal discussion about this opportunity call..."
I'm wondering whether I should give it a whirl just to get myself, hopefully, noticed in a positive way?
Thanks

As someone who does quite a lot of recruiting, I would advise calling for a discussion as it does give the opportunity to make an impression, and also to check out that the job would be suitable (and thus to avoid wasting time if not). It's worth doing some homework about the job and organisation first, and jotting down a few points to inquire about, and of course, things to slip into the conversation if interested.somewhere between Heaven and Woolworth's0

Definately worth the call, as said research the compnay and the job and if you have a name the person.
If local enough(and still keen) you could as the chat closes offer to bring in CV/application in person.
Do you know anyone else that works there0 -
So long as you remember that this informal chat is in fact an informal interview & prepare accordingly, ABSOLUTELY!
Plus, if it's pure telephone, you don't need to sort a suit etc immediately.0 -
Hi all
Thanks for the advice. Very nerve-wracking but I made the call. The person stated in the job advert was not available to speak but at least I picked up the phone and have left my name and number for them to call back - hopefully they will!
So hard this kind of self promotion.
Phew!

Absolutely you've done the right thing. I called up a company about a job before Christmas. They wanted someone with a higher qualification than I had, so I called up and said 'I've seen your job advert and it took my interest. I don't have Y qualification, but I do have X experience, would you consider my application?' They said Yes and appreciated my initiative and proactive approach. I didn't get the job in the end, but I think it helped me get an interview.
GwenThough no one can go back and make a brand new start, anyone can start from now and make a brand new ending0
