in Gone off!
A new butchers shop has opened where I live. Crawshaws.
Looking in the shop I must say the meat looks very very good. What surprised me was I could not see any indication concerning where the meat was sourced i.e no Little Red Tractor or the Union Jack. They had some very good looking chicken breast portions one had a label on it worded; Chinese Chicken!?
The shop was packed and I could not ask my question on sourcing. I picked up a leaflet with the same result. Nothing about sourcing of their products.
I visited their website. Still nothing about the product source.
I followed up my visit to the shop with an email to the company but never got a response from them.
Anyone know anything about this company and their products?

It's unlikely to be from China and called fresh. All you've got to do is ask and they will answer you. Maybe the email isn't the best way. Ask the butcher directly.:footie:Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)

It could be chicken that they're selling that's been marinaded, or with a rub to make chinese chicken, although I would expect it to be fairly obviously normally.
Crawshaws are a very good butcher chain however. xxx0 -

I realise the OP may have been looking at un-packaged chicken in this butcher, but when I buy bulk 5kg+ packs of chicken from my local catering butcher I can always tell where it comes from (i.e. the slaughter house or processing facility) due to the EU labeling rules. These codes are on meat, dairy and eggs - check out your next pint of milk!
The code will start with the standard country code i.e. BE for Belgium, DE for Germany etc. If you really want to you can look up the address of the actual facility.
Sorry the system will not let me post web links but if you look up "EC identification and health marks" on Wikipedia you can get links to decipher the codes in full.0 -
My two emails to Crawshaws have both failed to get a response.
I did manage to get into a shop and had a chat with the store butcher. He told me that only some of their products are sourced locally as their meats "come from lots of different countries".
Looking at a pack of Chicken breasts, for example, the label read" Rared and Slaughtered in Poland".
I was told that they have a notice which declares the country of origin of their products but they have been to busy to put it on display. They never offered to show it to me.They were busy at the time so I never pushed it.
I am not saying for one moment that there is anything wrong with Crawshaws meat, it looks very good. But???0 -

Their website says - "We're proud of our food" - but there's no mention on the site of where they source the meat from.
I expect a good butchers to be very open about the origin of their meat.0 -
An independent butchers nearby proudly advertises the local origins of their meat and poultry, and a wholesaler a few miles from us also is famous for locally bred and slaughtered meat. Any shop which gives very vague details of origin would ring alarm bells with me.One life - your life - live it!0

Are you sure that it's chicken?0
