Hi, I'm new to this so not sure if I've posted to the right category. I had a letter a few months ago sent to my old address from a debt collector company called LCS, informing me I owe Anglian Water over £500 and after reading about this company on other forums, it says not to contact them in any way. They make money from every letter, E-mail and call they make and they can't take anyone to court without proof. I don't owe this money as it was after I moved out of another property. Please can you tell me what I should do. Thank you.

Hi,
Welcome to MSE.
Your understanding of there working practices is a little off the mark.
They only make money if you pay them, they don't need any proof to take you to court either, they only have to produce proof if you challenge them to do so.
So ignoring them completely is not recommended as it could lead to a CCJ by default.
In other words, they can apply to the court, get there application granted, and a judgement issued, because you ignored the court papers, or they were sent to the wrong address, either way, you would end up with a county court judgement against you.
The correct way to challenge this is to ask for proof now, before it reaches the court stage.
Send the "provit" letter to them, template here, adapt it to your own situation :

This basically asks them to prove you owe what they say you do.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Debt free wannabe, Credit file and ratings, and Bankruptcy and living with it boards. There's a very long thread on this bunch here

The correct approach is to ignore them until they make a specific allegation (which it sounds like they have here) then send the prove-it.0
