Halifax fixed rate ending, earliest date to switch?

Hello, I have a mortgage with Halifax, locked in a fixed rate until 31 July 2016. What is the earliest date when I can request to switch to a new deal, so that I don't pay ERC, is that in April (with new fixed rate starting 1 May 2016)? Their website says there is a 3-month grace period. Thank you.
