Referral to hospital for extraction

Well, he had his appointment this morning and the dentist said that he wouldn't be able to remove the tooth and would have referred him as well. So, I guess it's a peace of mind, and now we just have to wait for the referral to be sorted.
Thanks for all your replies. :beer:marlasinger0 -
I'm now in exactly the same situation! My NHS dentist didn't have a go, but immediately referred me to the hospital. How much did it cost your husband? Did he get charged scale 2 because an extraction was attempted? I was only charged scale 1 (£18.80) and the hospital is free.
Do they always give general anaesthetic at the hospital? Do you have a choice of anesthetic? Do you have to change into a stupid gown and get attached to heart monitors and the like?0 -
I had a partially emerged wisdom tooth which my dentist didn't want to tackle in case he couldn't manage it.
I was referred to the dental hospital as he thought I would need a general aneasthetic.
The dental surgeon at the hospital said he thought he could remove it with a local so I agreed.
He actually removed it without me be aware of it, it was so quick and with no sensation at all. I thought he was still examining it.
I have had longer and more involved appointments for fillings.
It was in an ordinary dental surgery , normal dental chair and I went home afterwards.0 -

The same happened with my dentist when she removed a rear molar, but my jaw was sore for a couple of days, afterwards.
I expected lots of twisting and tugging.0 -
It always amazes me that we seek expert help and advice then reject it !
Me included, what is that about ?0 -

Maybe it's because we don't trust the experts!
On another thread I've just linked to a Telegraph article that has a dentist saying NHS dentists often extract teeth, instead of doing root canal work, because they make more money that way.
Also, I think we do not trust medical experts because medical science is not an exact science.
Lost in the fog of inexactitude and "gaming" we may just decide to stick our head in the sand...0 -

Sorry, only just seen this now. Can't remember how much he was charged but £18.80 sounds about right. We were both surprised by how inexpensive it was.marlasinger0 -
So, husband has had his referral letter for his hospital appointment.
In the letter it says: "If surgery is needed, your name will usually be added to a waiting list and treatment arranged later. Rarely, treatment can be done at the first visit."
So, does this mean that he won't get the extraction done at this appointment?? This is the first I've heard of this kind of thing....I just assumed a referral to the hospital for an extraction means you will get it done straight away. Surely it's a reasonably straight forward process?marlasinger0 -
Treatment is very rarely done at first appointment.
Medical and dental history , X Rays and consent are done at the first appointment . It is difficult to judge without seeing a patient what is the most appropriate way to extract the tooth/teeth eg whether sedation will be needed , whether it will be a surgical extraction etc.0 -
Thanks for the quick reply. At least we now know what to expect. I honestly thought he'd go in there, the dentist would whip the teeth out, and it'd all be over.marlasinger0
