Personal data and finance details

I have spoken to different mortgage brokers and given my personal data and finance information to them during the first initial discussion of my mortgage application.

Now I have decided to use one broker but feel uncomfortable that all of my sensitive personal data and finance information are kept in other brokers' systems. Can I request these brokers to delete all of my data from their systems, as I don't use them to apply for my mortgage.

Would anyone be concerned about their personal data being kept in the mortgage broker's system?

The Data Protection Act controls how your data can be used. If you don't proceed. The likely outcome is that it will be deleted or destroyed as has no value.
  • I'd suggest contacting any broker you've engaged but aren't proceeding with and letting them know you don't require assistance anymore.

It's the courteous thing to do and may alleviate your above concerns a little.

The data protection act does require that unnecessary data is removed. However, liability issues mean that financial services companies can hold on to it forever.

you can ask. They can refuse.

Not really when you consider that data protection is not just handled by the ICO but also the FCA. So, its makes breaches of regulated companies less likely.
