Right - so they would have to pay inheritance tax on it (if the estate is of sufficient value). If the OP knows this is a possibility, they should expect it rather than it coming as a complete surprise.
But it wouldn't be the OP paying it, it would come out of the estate so the OP does not need to worry about a tax bill arriving on their doorstep.0
