I seem to remember being asked this question some time in the past, but also don't remember being asked on recent returns, so I think the answer to your first question is no.

This is the relevant part which appears in the 'tell us about you section'. You have to complete the box or you get an error. It appears every time you attempt to file a return.

    3. Tailor your return
    File a return
    1. Welcome
    2. Tell us about you
    3. Tailor your return

    * indicates required information

In the tax year 6 April 2014 to 5 April 2015:

Did you make contributions towards a personal pension or retirement annuity? Y/N This does not include payments you make to your employer's pension scheme, which are deducted from your pay:* Help about: Contribute to personal pension or retirement annuity - opens in a new window

Did you give to charity? Y/N * Help about: Charitable giving - opens in a new window

If you, or your spouse or civil partner, were born before 6 April 1935 do you want to claim married couple's allowance? Y/N * Help about: Married couples allowance - opens in a new window

Do you want to claim other tax reliefs and deductions, for example, community investment tax relief, venture capital, maintenance / alimony payments? Y/N * Help about: Other tax reliefs and deductions - opens in a new window

Have you had any 2014-15 Income Tax refunded or off-set by us or JobCentre Plus? Y/N * Help about: Income tax refunded - opens in a new window

Did you have a tax adviser? Y/N * Help about: Tax adviser opens in a new window

Were you party to one or more tax avoidance schemes? Y/N * Help about: Tax avoidance schemes - opens in a new window

Are you acting in capacity on behalf of someone else?*

Every box that is ticked 'Y' requires completion at a later stage.

I really do think that this is simple human error - how would anyone remember such an innocuous question? Time to move on.

Never auto-completed. People change or dispense with agents all the time.

It wasn't filled at all, as I just completed the return as if I were my mum (I have LPA) rather than acting as an agent or advisor, all I'm saying is that the boxes are there on the return, so it's unclear to me why you can't just check them to see whether in your case an agent is listed.

Just to be clear, this is on the saved PDFs that I downloaded at submission.

Indeed. Just to be absolutely clear - the tax advisor section will NOT appear on an online return if you have earlier answered 'No' to the "Do you have a tax adviser? " question

I've checked the PDF of my tax return. The tax advisor section is blank.

Yet when I log in to my self assessment it was showing.

That is very odd indeed - I think that I would be telephoning HMRC on this.

The 64-8 will override whatever may or may not be put in the SA return boxes. Putting something in the box, or not putting anything in the box, won't create, delete or overide the 64-8. We act for over 100 personal SA clients and never put anything in those boxes, yet we get copies of demands, correspondence, etc., because of the 64-8. In fact we still get copies of demands and correspondence for long lost ex-clients who no longer do SA returns because they've not cancelled the 64-8 with HMRC, but we just shred anything we get.

Beginning to make sense. So if historically a 64-8 was completed (not that he or I reckon that ever occured) it would override me ticking the "no" box in answer to whether I have a tax advisor.

Though this is the first time he has ever received anything relating to my SA.

I've removed him as an agent through the online facility, so hopefully that is now the end of it.

    Thanks for all your help.
