First It ell them their name isn't Kevin (they choose a common name for the country they are scamming) then I tell them either I dont have any computers (as if lol) or that I have a mac.

My father gets calls from Kevin (or similar) regularly. There is no computer in his house. He is of a generation that doesn't need "new fangled things"

Kevin finds it really hard to believe him.

Sometimes when Kevin calls me I have a bit of fun being really stupid, not knowing where to find the windows key or expressing surprise that my computer has two CTRL keys.

But my preference is to put the phone down beside the radio or the TV and see how long they hang on for.

I have received scam calls before with a false British number displayed and if dialled it is unobtainable. But this local number although false works in that if you dial it, you reach the scammers who ask about Pension Review (OP Cath A please note this is not pension sales this is a scam - you would lose it all)!

Does this mean they are paying for call redirection? And if so can they be traced/shut down? Incidentally if you dial the number without the STD code (from landline) it does not work so it can not be local.
I am registered with the TPS and have anonymous call blocker which works well for UK numbers, but it doesn't stop the foreign-based scammers whose number usually displays as 'out of area'.

All calls require an STD code now anyway, even if you are calling a number in your area, so it wouldn't work anyway.

Not call redirection. You can pay a few Pounds a month for a local number in any area you like and it will be routed over the internet to a digital phone setup. You and I can use these as well, costs a couple of hundred Pounds once-off for the required hardware.

The details given to get the number can be traced but are unlikely to be genuine.

    I thought that as well!

You always need the area code (STD code as was!) is calling on a mobile or other network which isnt on the "proper" landline network.

When calling using a plain ordinary telephone (not via telephone system at work etc) the STD code is not usually mandatory.
  • It is where I live. We were advised of this within the last year or so. I am with Sky so maybe I this specific to them, but we can't just dial a local number without a code any more. We had to change all our stored preset dials because of this. You've got me confused now.

  • Got it now. I see that this came in in five areas in the UK, of which we are one (Aberdeen). I was beginning to think that I had dreamt it. :D Sorry for the confusion.
