need advice

When I took out Sky I got an amazing cashback deal so I thought it would be affordable....it's now gone up to the "normal price"

it's costing me £70 per month for the family bundle, talk evenings and hd and unlimited broadband.

I just can't afford this - I want to scrap the HD altogether, downgrade the broadband and tv to the minimum, but sky are telling me no because I'm in contract.

If I can't change it I am going to go into debt with sky (I'm on a DMP atm) so I don't know what I can do?

    Hi Dkd1987,

How long is left on your contract? If you can't afford it then you would have to cancel the direct debit and the remaining balance of the contract would become another debt for you to deal with (like the ones in a DMP) and, of course, Sky will disconnect the service, soon after the payments stop.

But be careful - talk to your DMP first. If you accrue more debt after the DMP started, they may cancel the DMP. If that is the case then you may have reconsider your options. Perhaps you could move to a different, free DMP provider or make small cut backs on some other things on your budget to finish the Sky contract and then cancel immediately. Good luck,

OP did you get a discount on your bills or did you just count the cashback as your discount? I would research what else is out there, some companies will give you money to buy you out of contract. I would speak to the various alternatives and ask if this is an option- if you don't ask you don't get. Then go back to Sky, go through to the cancellations department and tell them what you have been offered. Being armed with real information can really help your case.
Paid off the last of my unsecured debts in 2016. Then saved up and bought a property. Current aim is to pay off my mortgage as early as possible. Currently over paying every month. Mortgage due to be paid off in 2036 hoping to get it paid off much earlier. Set up my own bespoke spreadsheet to manage my money.
  • I recently contacted BT and they said they would pay the cost of ending the contract with Sky. Well worth a look at if you want to change.
BT offered phone line, anytime calls, Infinity and basic tv for £35 a month. They use Netflix for movies although I never asked if there was an additional cost. I was told to cancel my Sky account and when the final bill came they would credit my account with the cost. A no-brainer really!

I'm sure I saw on Martin Lewis show that something like 80% of people who phone Sky can haggle a discount. I pay £75 a month for tv with family bundle, phone line, anytime calls, Sky Fibre unlimited, HD, multiroom and Sky Go. So there's definitely some wiggle room for you to ask to pay less.

Yes but haggling a discount is only possible when you are out of contract.

The OP. Is not in that position, if it's really that unaffordable, then defaulting is your only option, as sky will want there money.

You will have to treat it as just another debt to service, and read the small print more thoughly next time !!!
