Interesting.
Inner London adds more value to the UK's economy in total than Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland put together! The City plus Camden adds more value than either Wales or NI and more than half as much as the 5,200,000 people of Scotland.
The poorest bits of the UK have a GVA of about the same as Croatia's GDP per head.0 -
Look at the growth in the GVA between 1997-2014 in London and especially Inner East London compared to rEngland
Goes quite a way to explain the boom in prices in London and especially mega boom in Inner East London
If you knock inflation off at 3% a year you get real growth of about 10-15% in most the regions while London grows at closer to 50% with inner London growing closer to 60%
So we really had a two speed country from 1997-2014 with London booming and the rest of the country barely growing in real terms. It was such a big change that London went from 23% of the UK economy to 29% over just 170 -
Independence for London and the SE I say - perhaps we need a referendum, or at the very least a 10,000 post thread.I think....0

The trend shows the rise of the new post industrial dynamic. The new seven wonders of the world will probably all be based in cities. They are so much more efficient and productive than sprawl.
They even make sense in the age of terrorism. You fortify small areas so much better than large ones.Proudly voted remain. A global union of countries is the only way to commit global capital to the rule of law.0 -
Back to the medieval approach of walled cities ?Left is never right but I always am.0

In London they just moved the wall out a bit and renamed it the Green Belt.0 -
Let London isolate itself and keep it's riches.
Where you gonna grow your food? Where you going to get your milk for your lattes and frapamochalattcinos?
I would imagine it will always be the case the citiies such as London will contribute more finance. But London would be nothing without the contributions of other stuff from the rest of the country.0 -

A word in you shell-like GD - I think michaels was joking.
As to the rest, I think the challenge is to see how places like Manchester and Edinburgh and Birmingham can gain the same sorts of successes that London has seen.0 -

I realise he was joking, but there does appear to be a theme running on here, maybe from the independance thread that everyone should bow down to London.
My point was that the whole country contributes (well, most of it!!) in some way. The contribution may not be excessive financials, but farming etc makes a huge contribution to the UK, though not necessarily financial.
Northern industry made the UK what it is today.0 -

That certainly wasn't my point.
My point was that it is truly amazing how successful London is compared to the rest of a fairly small country. How can parts of London (let's ignore The City) have a GVA per head factors larger than parts of Wales and NE England?
There must be lessons that can be learned by Government and also by the people living in those parts of the world to enable them to kick on.0
