Twitter quote vs RT (help?)

You know when they ask you to RT and reply? Well do you press that quote button which sort of adds your comment along with a quote of their tweet, or do you press RT and then leave a separate comment?
I notice that the quote part doesn't then green-out the RT logo, so if they choose winners by clicking that and seeing the list of green-RT accounts then it would exclude the people who quoted??
I hope this makes sense because it's really difficult to explain. Thanks!
