PPI query

Hi all
It's me again:o
I am fairly confident we have never had PPI on any loans or cards. However, we recently got a letter from the AI scheme and it told me we had some sort of card protection cover and I completed it (using the wording from MSE) and we got some money back (nothing major but between the 2 cheques that turned up it totalled about £200).
So, I am wondering if it's worth checking the Direct Line and Northern Rock loans we had in the past. The Northern Rock loan was for £25k and we paid £395.86 p/mth for 84 months. I paid that one off in full and never went to consolidate it with another loan. I have long since shredded the paperwork and cannot remember the APR.
Similarly we had 2 loans with Direct Line (before the Northern Rock loan). I can't remember the amounts, but think we consolidated the last DL loan into the NR loan.
I seriously don't think we had any PPI but someone mentioned to me yesterday that loan companies added PPI without borrowers realising - is this true, and could this have happened to us?
Any thoughts on whether it's worth checking and if so how we go about it given that I have no information on these cleared loans at all?

Oh yes it's very true !!
Send letters to all of them, it was very common for banks to just add this insurance without telling you, or saying it was compulsory.
It was a Hugh scam perpetrated by almost all financial institutions for decades, they completely flouted the law, and lied to there customers blatantly !!
When they were found out, they tried desperately to get the courts to rule they had done nothing wrong, the courts refused, and here we are !!
It makes me smile to myself when I read posts from people saying you should repay what you borrow, as if banks are fine upstanding pillers of the community, when all along they are more crooked than the people that try to rob them !!

Thanks - will it matter that I have no idea of dates, amounts (DL Loans) or account numbers?
I'll send the close account template letter from this page on MSE
The worst that can happen is I waste some ink, paper and stamps

I sent a very simple letter to the Hellifax.
It was along the lines of :
Dear Hellifax,
I have been a customer since the dawn of time.
Over that period I had various loans and credit card accounts from you.
Please advise if any of these accounts came with PPI insurance or not.
Thank you
Sourcrates.
They got back to me with a list of accounts, numbers, etc what I'd paid blah blah, complaints duly sent, and ultimately won back 4 grand from them.
It depends if your details are still on there systems or not, if you have no paperwork, and they don't, your stuffed.
Something else's validity that ultimately boils down to having the right piece of paper or not !!I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Debt free wannabe, Credit file and ratings, and Bankruptcy and living with it boards.
