no 17-18 year old is a man they are still children, even if they have done military service and have a kid of their own they are still a child themselves.
I would guess that for a lot (virtually all) 17-18 year olds the option is not living with their mothers or buying a nice house for themselves. Its living with their parents or living in a crap share house with strangers.
Were I a woman I dont think I would be any more impressed by a 'man' who was renting a room or flat than I would a 'man' who had a good relationship with their parents and a good job and choose to live with their parents to save up. I would probably feel the one staying with parents with £70k of savings and a decent full time job was a much better catch and a much better man than the one living in a room with his 'mates' without £700 to their name
Also I wonder if there is a 'class bias' here.
A lot of the middle class families I know I think would agree with me, they tend to support their kids beyond the 18 year old line drawn as 'adult' whereas a lot more (but definitely not all) of the working class families I know have more of a '18 and their out'/'18 and i'm out' sort of approach.0 -

A real man has no need to impress a woman, a real man can also live with whoever he likes. A woman laughing at someone for securing a good future is an imbicile.0 -
Part of the OP's problem is that on roughly average salary she is trying to buy in one of the most expensive towns in the UK.
The problem is pretty clear: if you want to buy somewhere expensive you need to be rich, the OP is averagely well off, if with an above average level of savings.0 -
@ukcarper - good shout on posting links. What Ive found within a 20mile radius (according to Rightmove so not sure how accurate they are). Admittedly not a lot is on there but there were a few, including this gem
Three bed semi - under 200K. Needs work (almost as much as my house did) but refer back to my previous message. Decent size and huge garden. OP - This is exactly the type of property I would purchase if I were you. OK, its minging and you won't have a lot of money to do it up at first, but paint is cheap and do it bit by bit.

Somebody's mummy kicked them out at an early age .... and now they're doomed to spending their life trying to impress ladies.
Ladies don't need to be impressed... unless there's a huge flaw that needs to be overlooked.0 -

Are you actually a parody poster? All of this reads like a script for someone trying to make this forum look like a place for !!!!!!!!s.
I reckon you're a fake "man".0 -
I know what you mean OP. We live about 15 mins from Guildford in Fleet and it's just as expensive. We brought 5 years ago when I was 20. Wasn't easy but we got full time jobs at 18 and saved £1k+ each for a couple of years while living with parents rent free. We were very lucky they wanted us to be able to save rather than accept rent.
We were also lucky the market prices were still down from 2008 so we brought at a lower price. Still stupid prices IMO. Only a 2 bed semi but it still cost us £200k. Since then the price has just gone up up up. It's crazy.
You need a partner or someone else to buy with. Or lower your expectations and go for something smaller. Or move to less desirable areas like aldershot/bordon. Or a lotto win.Total Mortgage OP £61,000Outstanding Mortgage £27,971Emergency Fund £62,100I AM NOW MORTGAGE NEUTRAL!!!! <<Sep-20>>0 -

I also live in the area not fleet, property is more expensive in Guildford than Fleet and where I live but still expensive, I think you would have to move out to Bordon to have any chance of finding a house for less than £200k but flats are available in Aldershot. As you say prices have gone mad over the last couple of years houses that would have been under £200k 2 years ago are £240k now. As an aside as a couple we couldn't afford to buy a house in Guildford 40 years ago and had to move further out and that was on a salary equivelent to higher than 30k.0
