Income tax inderpaid

Apologies if this is in the wrong section, can't see anything for income tax?

I work for the NHS and get paid a salary every month with the odd little extra for unsociable hours now and again, every year I get a letter from hmrc saying I have underpaid tax and have to ring them up to pay, every year it's between 100-200 pounds.

I'm just wondering how they manage to mess up my tax? Every month I get paid circa 2100 I have a salary sacrifice of 360 per month for a car, is this is all taken off then I pay tax on what's left, my tax code is lower as I pay company car tax. Is it normal to underpay tax if you are paye? I don't really see how it's my fault? Is this a fault of payroll at the hospital or at the hmrc? Read a few things recently about not having to pay up if it's. Fault of the payroll dept.

It's not normal to underpay on PAYE but it can happen. I'd suspect that there is some issue with your company car tax but it's not an area I know much about. I would take it up with payroll in the first instance.

Although it might not necessarily be your fault that there are underpaid amounts, it is your responsibility to make sure all income is correctly taxed and that your employer and HMRC have all the relevant info to make sure it is.
