    Thanks for your concern izzybella.

Do you have a lot of experience placing dental implants?

I do trust my implantologist. He has been placing implants for 10 years with a 97% success rate. He also teaches and mentors at the Royal College of Surgeons, and is an examiner for candidates sitting their Diploma in Restorative Dentistry, so I think he knows what he is doing.

Could you show me the relevant research please? I am keen to do anything I can to ensure the best chance of a successful outcome.

Hi, it is just something that happens sometimes. Bone shrinkage after extraction is fairly common, the bone has to be a minimum width for an implant to be placed.

What you have to consider is your implantologist will have no concern about preventing this because he will just think if it happens we will do a bone augmentation. But for you this will mean an extra 6 months with a missing tooth, this makes no difference to your implantologist and would have given it little consideration.
  • Which tooth is it?

If it is an upper 1st or 2nd molar most likely the sinus cavity will fall into the space requireing a sinus graft before implant....will cost about 3 times as much as a bone augmentation.
  • sinus lift*
  • I think his primary concern is for the long term prognosis of the implant, as is mine.

Any bone augmentation would be at additional cost, which I have been quoted for, but told that it is highly possible that this won't be required.

Do you routinely place a bone graft at the time of extraction, and do you charge for this?

It was quite a complex surgical extraction as the tooth was completely fractured. I'm not sure I could have sat through much more to be honest. I was glad to get out of the chair.
  • Many thanks for your concern izzybella, and I'm sure you're an excellent implantologist. However, you are not the one who has examined me thoroughly, taken x-rays and written a treatment plan specifically for me. I have copies of all my notes and my implantologist is confident that there is good clearance between the implant site and the sinus cavity.
