Petrol is absolutely fine - we don't eat/drink it so it doesn't come out of the food budget :D I'm also going to buy some nice flowers as it's my mum's anniversary tomorrow :A
  • Sewing tin - mine is a 1993 St Michael biscuit tin, octagonal in shape, about 10 inches across and 3 and a half inches deep. It's dark green with a gold coloured swirly design to all eight sides, and the lid has a two inch border and a central inset octagon with a design of floribunda roses.

Reels of cotton can stand upright and it houses all the usual bits and pieces like tape measures and pin boxes and scissors etc. It's pretty enough to be on display, so it sits permanently on an old oak ottoman in the living room so it's always handy. The lid is tight enough to deter curious little ones.

In the (distant) past I've had those 'proper' sewing boxes, with tapestry lids and compartments but they are too cumbersome and ugly so this has been in use now for 20 odd years. If I go to DD's to use her fancy machine, I just take the entire tin with me!

TMI probably, but until today I have never really fully appreciated my lovely and useful tin, so thank you for asking!

I also used to wait up for my gang when they were late teens/college stage - going to bed is useless as they wake you up stamping around the house when they get back. Mostly it was eldest son doing the stamping. Eldest child left home when she was just turned 18 but in the odd times she was home afterwards I still waited up.

Its a battle of nerves outwitting teens/young adults - I don't think anyone actually wins - it's just the game that keeps changing

I could never figure out which was better - turning out in all weathers and at all hours to collect mine, or the prolonged wait for the return. If collected, you knew they were OK earlier but you got all the silliness in town plus random requests (that I never refused) to give a friend a lift, even though the friend lived 10 miles in the opposite direction.:rotfl:

    :)

I have remembered to get the rubbish out for collection tomorrow - every 3 weeks they collect our rubbish now :(
And then they confused everyone by altering the schedule at Christmas.

If they collect the rubbish is another debate :o
