I saw this in store. No, it's nowadays to me to be seen as a decoy IMO to distract/divert ordinary shoppers into believing they can pocket more by buying the items in the basket that are cheaper, whereas in truth we know that you really only pocket more when you buy items that are cheaper at one specific elsewhere and either get 10% off the competitor offer prices, which are better than A's own straight offers on other items that are cheaper than elsewhere and therefore see you buying those more expensive cheaper prices, or get pocketing even more.
Really, the "this basket is cheaper" and APG are contradictory. The APG gives nothing, or virtually nothing, where a basket is cheaper (my wonder about "this basket is cheaper" was "...but is it at least 10% cheaper?:think:). The APG certainly does not give as much as it does when it finds items at A to be much more expensive than the basket of a competitor. A are not promoting the APG at this time - it is under review and time to pause on certain things.
On the "look for over 1000 items" on which prices are cheaper than T..., the idea is that that sounds good - to the ordinary shopper - but in fact supermarkets stock over 30,000 items therefore it represents only about 3% of the items stocked. On other items, presumably they are expensive non-comparable, more expensive or the same price. And even if some of the 1000 are cheaper, they may not be 10% cheaper. Some of course will be way cheaper than elsewhere at the moment - but some of those just need to await a competitor to bring their price down to match and then APG. "Look for over 1000 items" (on which we're cheaper) - so, presumably, the ordinary shopper is going to know, just by looking, what those items are?:huh: Indeed, look for items which are cheaper and, therefore, if they are brands, best bought elsewhere!
That's not of course the message they want to give - and it's not the one that the ordinary shopper gets I suspect. The ordinary shopper does not want their purchases to be cheaper elsewhere:wall: (and therefore perhaps able to claim at least 10% off) - A has to advertise, to the normal shopper, that they are cheaper - normal shoppers want reassurance not actual really excellent value or really pocketing money - they just want to be told that they are (even though they largely are not). The list of items in the basket was not in very large print in the material displayed up in my A - can you imagine any shopper really stopping at it to examine it? (The truth is, I suspect, it is not meant to be examined and looked into, because, if it were, then the whole thing would fall apart - so they just put it in the store as basically background advertising which operates in the background, gets the main message of "we are cheaper" across and shoppers don't bother to probe into it.) If they did, I'm sure they'd be stopped and asked what they were doing - like I had once with my price taking in M - how dare I take prices!:rotfl:
If I stopped to examine the list though, what it reveals is that any brands on it are the items best bought at T or S in order to get the same price at T:wall: or use a cond.spend and get a BM:) from S. Perhaps look it at (if you dare:rotfl:) when you're in store though - to tell you what items to not purchase if you don't want to ruin your APG against that competitor:rotfl:.
"Look out for 1000 items..." - I thought "I'll look out for these items as ones to avoid buying if I want to save money" (by the better APG on other items than A's own offer prices). If people do buy these items and they are much cheaper than elsewhere, then the rare chance they check the APG and they'll get we're more than 10% cheaper and no voucher:wall::wall:.
A can't advertise that "we're more expensive than elsewhere and you save far more by buying these items and claiming the APG to 10% off the competitor's cheaper prices" because, (1) that is a complex message that will be misunderstood by the vast majority of the general public; and (2) saying "we are more expensive than elsewhere" immediately sends people away rather than, as it should, towards those more expensive items on which we really save the money! So, they have to keep drumming the message (as do all supermarkets) that we are cheaper and that we've cut prices so that people stay with them or switch to shopping at them.
The "this basket is cheaper" is exactly like the Morries basket tactic of several months ago. "This basket is £xxx cheaper". Yes, but had I taken a different basket, on which prices have increased and items come off offer and some of them more than doubled, some even trebled, this other basket would now cost far more pounds more! It's all basket comparisons - but it depends entirely on what you put into your basket. And, under the APG, you should definitely avoid the items on which the basket is now cheaper. With me it is "this basket is cheaper" -.
I don't want it cheaper:eek: - I want it to be as humanly expensive as possible on the comparison and as cheap as possible, preferably free, at one place elsewhere. (Though if it were free, I'd lose any 10%:(:rotfl:. Ten per cent of nought is....?)
People generally want their shopping to be cheaper:wall: and telling them this basket is cheaper reassures them that they aren't being ripped off compared to elsewhere. Which is usually because they are buying the wrong items and therefore paying over the odds by not switching to a different pack size that is on a much better offer elsewhere and therefore 10% off that price is far far better than a 'cheaper' price on another size that is more expensive elsewhere. A complex thought that most people outside can't understand:rotfl: - so they prefer the "cheaper" message and end with getting at a much worse price:rotfl:.0 -
