Should wages increase relative to the Minimum Wage?

Prior to October I was earning £6.75 p/h, 25p over the minimum wage. My wages stayed at £6.75 after the increase in October, so now they are only 5p above minimum wage. Does this classify as a wage reduction?

I suspect that it doesn't and I've simply been shafted by my employer, but I thought I'd check to see if I can legally claim back what I might potentially by owed.

Thanks,
Trev.

Unless your contract says you are paid 25p higher per hour than the NMW then you have not been shafted, you have been paid the amount you agreed to.

If you don't like it then negotiate or move on to another job.

It's been common for wages to remain pretty stagnant until NMW catches them up. I doubt your wages will increase.

If you are over 25yrs then you'll see the increase to £7.20 in April.

it really depends on your position, where I work the sales assistants get min wage soon to go up to £7.20 ph . But some of the managers are on 7.35ph , therefore they will only be on 15p an hour more than their assistants which is not fair as they have more responsibilities and tend to have more experience.

No-one will know until April if their wages will go up in pro so there is a lot of anger

This is similar to my situation, I'm supposed to be the Assistant Bar Manager, more money for the increase in responsibility (it wasn't enough of a rise in the first place) but now I'm earning almost the same as everyone else. This sucks!

  • Just tell them you'd rather just be a barman again then.

The employer doesn't have to allow this though.

No they don't. But if they don't allow that, and also won't raise his wages to make doing the managerial job worthwhile, then he can leave and get a barman's job or assistant manager's job elsewhere.

If the job is not worth the additional money, then they won't get anyone else to fill it who is capable of getting a barman's job.

And as in any case where they is an insufficient differential between reward and responsibility, they will end up only being able to hire managers who are effectively less employable than the staff they are managing, as they are the ones who didn't have a choice.

This happens a lot more often than you would suppose.

Negotiate...and if that fails. Leave. They will not find another person willing to take on that responsibility for MW plus 5p.
