Is there such a thing as cheap makeup versions, and if so what are they?

You could try googling dupes of... there are sites dedicated to finding high street copies of premium products :)

Bourjois make up is far older than Chanel, at one point they where made in the same factory. But had nothing to do with each other. Both owned by totally different companies

MAC is owned and made by Estee Lauder a US company. EL does not own or has anything to do with Topshop.
Benefit is American but made in France.

Don't put anything past by any of these 'premium' brands.

My DD is mad on make and talks about brands I had never heard of! She spends far more on make up than me. I buy Clinque foundation, no 17n lipsticks and bourjois mascara and then I have her left overs that she's rejected as not liking.

I know she likes Body shop mattifying day cream as she has oily skin and two faced primer along with Nars foundation. Lipsticks Mac and no 17 lipsticks.

She does like Urban Decay and Nars eyeshadows. She's had fake naked pallets but they don't last as well. She uses UD setting spray.

As a student she's tried cheaper brands over the years but as she's so pale many foundations sit heavy on her skin.

She bought me a Channel lipstick for Xmas and keeps borrowing it as it's so lovely and soft.

Apparently though my make up is too "old" as I've had some of it for years !

Only their crackled nail polish! It's aimed at teens isn't it?

Chanel keep very very very tight control where their makeup is sold.

Benefit, used to be a good brand now silly aiming for the late teens market. I haven't bought from them in years. All their products used to be made in San Francisco as that is where they were founded by two sisters. The daughters of said sisters have taken over. But are now owned by LVHM(who own Guerlain,Dior,Givenchy and started and own Sephora), a French company hence now made in France. They are no longer a US company as bought out way back

So have you ever seen any MAC made outside Canada/USA? No. Unless FAKE, the famous parties where people buy really cheap all fake. They are the money cow for Estee Lauder and they keep it close.

Bourjois have been a makeup brand since 1800s, Chanel didn't do makeup until later in the 20th century. Both at one time owned by the same private company but no way the same quality.
  • I buy from ELF - Eyes Lips Face.
Their prices are cheap but I find the quality is good.

Rimmel have improved dramatically from the mid 90s when I was buying the cheapest makeup my teenage pocket money would get me! I moved onto Max Factor and Benefit as an adult but recently went back to Rimmel after watching lots of YouTube reviews saying it was good. Collection is also surprisingly good now. Kiko is another brand which has regular discounts that I've found to be good. My top products would be Collection Lasting Perfection concealer, Rimmel Wake Me Up foundation, Rimmel waterproof mascara (any one), Eyelure eyebrow pencil (best one of the lot - in the fake lashes section of Boots), Kiko liquid eyeliner, and Maybelline Baby Lips tinted lip balm.

I swear most of the hype around the higher end stuff is down to the marketing as all these products are great and a lot cheaper.

I also think the best way to get cheaper products to work well us to spend the money saved on a good set of brushes as they make all the difference esp getting foundation and concealer to cover well and last. I really like the Real Techniques brushes for foundation and concealer but I think you can get away with cheaper for the eyes.

~I love a bargain and I love my brands. I would rather buy a brand that I like than two items from a brand that I don't. It is cheap economy.
I have done it too many times when I;ve decided I should tighten my belt and not spend much on make up.
It never worked, the difference is big, besides I am 31yo, I need to look after my skin. Ive bought a Clinique concealer for £19, it hurt at first but it lasted me 9 months !! Great value for money, my Mac lipsticks and Nars blushers seem to last forever, they are so pigmented. My make up for me, it is the same as my clothes, not about quantity but about quality.
