I was also going to say that it looks like band 5 which is the band newly qualified clinical staff would usually start on (or at least they would have done a few years ago). Is that the level you're looking for?

I have been a recruiting manager in the NHS and personally I would allow you to start further up the scale assuming it is a comparable role. It really depends on the individual manager and the organisations culture though.

From my NHS experience it's always been bottom of the band if you are from outside the NHS. Different to my experience in the private sector where I've started above the max salary advertised!

Thanks everyone for the responses. For those that asked, its a non clinical role and I live outside of London.

I've decided that I'm going to apply for the role. I've not got anything to lose by trying. If I do get to a position whereby I get an offer, I'll just have to go from there.

I recruit to non-clinical roles in the NHS, and occasionally, if the candidate is right, we will appoint high / top of the band.

This would require the candidate to be ideal for the role, far beyond any of the other candidates, be currently earning more than the bottom of the band (we'd put them on the next point above their current salary), and would require director sign off, as this would come out of their budget.

Not often it happens, but it does occasionally. Negotiate, the worst they can say is no.
