Lies all Lies by the bank that gives you extra

My mum has been discussing with the halifax bank a default that was added to her credit file a number of years ago and incorrectly so -
The Halifax have written to her stating that they have asked for the default to be removed from her credit file as they agree it is there in error however both experian and exquifax have stated that the Halifax have not asked for the Default to be removed.
Halifax are now saying that they won't remove the default as they believe it to be correct - however my mother has a letter stating that it is incorrect and that they have asked for it to be removed..
I personally have had massive problems witht he halifax telling lies and stretching the truth - like being told if i kept to a new payment agreement they wouldn't default my account and then doing exactly that ?
Is there someone we should report the blatant lying to ? should it be FSA or OFT ?
From where can we add extra pressure to make them remove this ?

Short & sweet answer

Halifax are incompetant at times, we've been with them years and in that time they have sent stuff to wrong addresses - bank cards, statements etc, and we've had numerous admin problems. However we've stuck with them because I don't really believe there are any much better, they refunded bank charges very easily and quickly and I claimed a BIG amount, their mortgage and loan applications have always gone through very quickly, I love their online banking and their ultimate reward account is extra good! It's just a shame that their departments don't seem to talk to each other!
We have also got a Nationwide account and that one seems ok, but no better. At the moment I am disputing mortgage arrears of £268 with Halifax that they say we owe them, I have phoned the arrears and mortgage departments and both have said it is a system error and we DON'T owe any arrears but I don't trust them and I'm going to phone them again today, they said it would all level out at the end of the month, but I'm going to check..........Debtfree JUNE 2008 - Thank you MSE:T0 -
Sorry to hear you are having issues with the Halifax over a default that appears to be incorrect. I had exactly the same thing a year or so ago. They passed details of a default to various credit reference agencies even thought the default (for about £40) occurred while I was awaiting charges to be refunded of almost £4000! I had long since reached agreement with their Customer Services team about that and was awaiting monies reaching my account. Of course, that didn't stop Collections calling 7 or 8 times a day chasing for that £40.
The whole issue was only resolved after writing direct to the Chief Executive's Office. May be worthile sending a letter to the Chief Exec and try and get his Office to resolve it. They did with me, although they did have to write to both Experian and Equifax to have the default removed and clear up my credit file. That took an extra 6 weeks or so to resolve it.
Give them a chance to solve it that way, if they don't, let the feathers fly!Almost debt-free, but certainly even with the Banks!0 -
I'd put a complaint in to the financial ombudsman service

When we make a mistake we get charged for it.
When the banks make a mistake, they expect you to wait quite happily for weeks at a time only to be told the opposite of what had been arranged.

I think Nationwide are better than Halifax personally, having had a mortgage with them both.
We have had better customer service from Nationwide (they pay our mortgage payment even if we put the money in the account a couple of days late, and don't write us stroppy letters and bounce the payment like the Halifax used to).
Anyway I hate the Halifax adverts, they are so irritating! If they spent less money on glossy advertising maybe they could train their staff better so they didn't make foolish errors.
I would complain to everyone the other posters have suggested, spread the net wide and you might get a response! Finally Debt Free After 34 Years, But Still Need to Live Frugally
