New job, Tax codes and credits

Hiya, My partner has been on long term disability benefits, but recently decided he wanted to work again because the stress of claiming was too much, and not helping his illness.

Before he'd even looked into returning to work, and the new deal schemes, a friend told him about a job in his company, which my partner went for and got :j. He started work this week This all happened in the space of a couple of weeks, so we will be informing the income supp people next week. (he was on a weeks trial initially, and didnt want to risk the claim if it was all completely unworkable)

However, my partner did not tell his employees about being on benefits, as he did not really want that to follow him into the positive step of starting work. His new employer now needs his tax code, which obviously he doesn't have. Does anyone know how he can get hold of this? And will his new employer be informed about his benefit claim by the inland rev?

He is hoping to take some time off next week, for a doctors appt, and to sort all the inland rev and benefits stuff out all in one go. Its all so worrying, he wont be payed for another month, and obviously our benefits will now stop so I don't quite know how we will manage, but its only one month so hopefully we will be OK.

Also, does anyone know how long tax credit claims take to process? We will really need them to live on as my partner's new salary is quite low, Less than we received from his income support and SDA. Its really difficult coming off of benefits, I can see why it becomes so hard for people to leave the system!

Mupps :)

Can't help with any of the benefits stuff but regarding the tax code: Employers normally get this from your P45 but as your OH doesn't have one they should give him a P46 to fill in, this will enable them to get the tax code to use for him. This is standard practice if you don't have a P45 to hand in to them, if he's told them he doesn't have one they should have given him the P46 to complete straight away. He doesn't have to say he was on benefits before, just that he doesn't have a P45 from this tax year. If he explains this to them , he should get the form to fill in and they will know which tax code to use for him. They won't be informed of any benefits he was claiming.
  • Thanks for that info, I shall tell him to get hold of this P46 form.

If the employer looks blank, you can download and print one from https://www.hmrc.gov.uk - search for P46. It tells the employer what to do with it!
Signature removed for peace of mind
  • Thanks, after I read that post about the P46 I did just that and sent him the link at work. He's printed it out at filled it. saved him looking completely blank in front of his new boss!
