I have soo enjoyed reading all these memories, it has brought loads back...
What is it with the swimming thing, I remember those lovely puffy crisps, my favourites were the worcester sauce ones yum...
I was a child of the 80's so great to see all those sweets/chocs that I still miss like nutty bars, cabanas - does anyone remember secret agent sweets? they were boiled sweets with a different flavour filling, like choc/lime etc.
My memories inlude, Bunty comic on a Friday, 10p (went up to 15p) to spend on sweets on a Saturday afternoon when my Dad would be looking after us whilst Mum worked at my Grandads toy shop - my faves would be 2 oz's (couldn't afford a quarter) of lemon bon bons or cola cubes...
Also Dads saturday teas used to be stuff like, pilchards on toast and he always used to add milk to our baked beans - what's that all about !Jun GC £250.00/£12.40 NSD 3 / 30

Milkman milk arriving before breakfast - ditto for the post!
Dad's moped that he used to get to work (he worked nights so it was easier to use the scooter).
Say no to poll tax posters all over the street.
Making do.
It's funny I read so much about how expensive living is today, but I sure remember being a lot poorer growing up (1980s).£4000 challenge

did anyone else suffer instant death if they left the house with wet hair!
sorry for too much infomation but sanitary towels with belts attached (more teenage memory than childhood)
cabana bars were the best thing ever invented (even beter than a quarter of cola cubes)- prior planning prevents poor performance!

I've thought of some more too. Balmaiden's mention of jumble sales reminded me of how we were often carted off to one of these on a Saturday afternoon, partly for whatever goodies might be unearthed there, and partly so my dad wouldn't have to worry about keeping us all quiet while my mum slept after the night shift. Favourite jumble sale memories involve my sister being half strangled by a couple of over-enthusiastic bargain hunters when her scarf trailed over the table while she was browsing (she laughed afterwards too, honest
) and the look on my dad's face as he tried to surreptitiously shove us all into a different queue outside one church when he noticed that everyone in our line was incredibly well-dressed for a jumble sale and realised that we'd all spent the last ten minutes queueing to get into a wedding.
We hardly ever had sweets as kids, but when I was about five (1969 or so) went through a phase where we were given one each every day to counteract the dreadful taste of the medicine we'd just been given. This was either Scott's Emulsion or Fenning's Fevercure, both designed to head off any ailment or affliction before it even got as far as you (including omelette salt-mine poisoning, presumably), and both tasting absolutely vile - particularly galling to have to take when there is nothing at all wrong with you. I expect this was why it was some years before we tentatively mentioned sweets again
My mum and dad were also great ones for trying any health food kicks that were around in the seventies provided they weren't expensive, as well as anything new or remotely exotic. I can still remember when my mum discovered paprika (first sprinkled over egg sandwiches at picnics, and then over EVERYTHING!) but would probably prefer to forget the cider vinegar stint. We were expected to drink a glass of this every day (another 'remedy' designed to cure you of being healthy as far as me and my sisters were concerned), but luckily were left to our own devices once we'd been given our glasses, so it wasn't too long before my mum had abandoned thoughts of our welfare and was worrying about the health of her houseplants instead, most of which had mysteriously started dying...Eek! Someone's stolen my signature! :eek:0 -
I started something didn't I!
Can't believe everyone has so many favourite memories.
I just had to add a few more.
Dallas on a Saturday night with my nan and grandad - me an my sister could choose a packet of crisps and my nan would have a mars bar and my grandad would have a frys turkish delight.
10p mix ups and never having enough money for the "big" chocolate bars.
Saturday afternoon (after visiting my nans and shopping) sat in the passageway of my parents local pub with a bottle of coke and straw or in dads works van listening to the sport on the radio.
Grandad doing the pools and spot the ball every week - he never did win. But kept saving the "wining pictures" as reference.
Going on holiday in the back of my dads van with my sister to relatives in Wales for a week, or someones caravan.
Sitting watching the test card waiting for the TV programmes to start.
Starting my doing a paperround at 13 then various saturday jobs for money.
Playing out in the road or woods till late with the rest of the kids in the street. Playing thunder and lightening (knock and run).
My first duvet set - brown flowerey and made of nylon, it never stayed on the bed. My mom getting her first front loading washing machine.
My nan and grandad using the phone box over the road.
Glad everyone has such fond memories it has been really funny reading them all.0 -
